Sports Medicine Articles
Quote | Reply
I'm a specialist Sport and Exercise Physician with a special interest in endurance sports.
I've been on Slowtwitch for years (about 6 according to my profile but I could've sworn it has been longer)
I don't post much and I generally try to avoid the topics discussing medical complaints and requesting advice as giving that sort of instruction over an internet forum is fraught with danger.
Anyway, I've started writing regular articles about relevant issues in sports medicine from supplement use to recovery strategies to management of common conditions.
If anyone is interested they can follow me at;

https://www.facebook.com/drgarycouanis/

The facebook site has been operational for a couple of months and has heaps of articles that have already been posted.
In future I will be posting to twitter as well;

https://twitter.com/DrGaryCouanis

If you want to read some specific topics, I'll list a few here;

Stress Fractures
Cortisone Injections
What is more important: Diet or Exercise?
Exercise and Cancer
Busting Myths (ice baths, magnesium, stretching)
Busting Myths II (massage, topical ice, topical gels, compression socks)
Supplement Contamination and WADA
Buttock Pain in Runners
To rest or not to rest an injury?
High Intensity Interval Training - good or bad?

Like I said, follow if you find it interesting. I'd love to hear feedback, questions and suggestions.

Thanks.

Thank you for putting this together.

I read your article about rest vs no rest for an injury. I was going to suggest an article about osteitis pubis (OP) and then notice you do briefly mention it. Most people on this forum will (fortunately) never get OP but it is so frustrating to deal with because of so many associated unknowns. It took me over six months to recover but I had read it can take up to 2 years. I'm back to doing SBR but still have a persistent ache (at the pubis symphysis if I swim without a pull buoy).
When I went to see sports med docs here in the USA, most admitted its very uncommon and had not seen many cases. In my own research, there are a lot of reports, in the medical journals, out of Australia (mostly with rugby players, it seems). Hoping you get a chance to detail your experience dealing with this injury.

Just a couple of comments on the supplement article.

The AIS link you provide goes to a private login to a secure site. At least that what it looks like.

It might be beneficial to also link to the USADA Supplement 411 site which has a list and even an app.

I do think you overstate the case a little bit - an electrolyte supplement from a name-brand company probably carries effectively zero risk. Also it's worth mentioning that "supplements" is also likely the leading excuse given by intentional dopers which makes it very difficult to sort out the frequency of actual unintentional supplement positives.

Some good stuff in those articles, nicely distilled for those who don't want an Alex-Hutchinson-style deconstruction.
