Are larger front CR more efficient?
Answer me this one ST,
Is a larger front chainring more efficient BECAUSE it lifts the chain off the teeth so there is less grinding with chain crossing, particularly in a 1x setup?

I ask because I had a 52 on the front, and would get a lot of chain noise in anything but the middle 4 sprockets, down at the bottom of the cassette it was nasty!
Putting on a 54 not only meant I could spend more time in the the middle sprockets but it was also much quieter across the board.

It made me wonder if this made the drivetrain more efficient?

A straighter chainline is more efficient.

For a given ratio, more teeth on the gears means less friction. As already noted, running on or close to chainline is key.
