Has this ever happened in a 70.3?
With more and more non pro races, I'm wondering if this has ever happened.... in the 70.3s that I've done, they often have the older male and female age groups go right after the pros to give them more time to finish, I presume, as well as keeping the pointy ended men away from the female pros.....so in a non pro race, has it ever happened where they start the waves randomly, or with old people first, so that the eventual winner doesn't get th privilege to break the tape at the finish, or even know that he won the race until after the race when he looks online at results? If I were good enough to go 4hrs flat like some top amateurs and win a non pro race, I'd be pissed if I didn't get to cross the finish line first.

Not sure about any 70.3 but it can easily happen in any race that starts in a TT format.

For example at IMMD this year due to the TT start after the cancelled swim, the 1st woman who crossed the line (and thus was given a tape to break) ended up actually being 3rd OA.

Happens all the time and not just at 70.3's. Any race that doesn't have a pro field and no elite amateur wave (AG nationals, non pro 70.3/140.6 races).

The top amateur at Steelhead has finished sub 4:05 and sub 4 a few times most years and placed as high as 3rd overall including pros. However, there is some benefit to starting in a later wave and getting a legal draft off lap traffic. Plus wind conditions can shift significantly, so it's hard to compare.

In reality, most of the 'journeyman" lower rung pros are still faster than most of the best amateurs.

However, there are a few top amateurs that were either pros previously but race as amateur now, but have some sponsors and I call them "professional amateurs" and a few that meet the Elite criteria, but haven't gone pro for various reasons. Usually that are sub par swimmers and average cyclists (for a pro) so a pro race would be pretty lonely until the last few miles of the run.

If there is a pro field, you have to race in the pro field to win the race. Otherwise you aren't subject to the same race conditions and tactics and have potentially an unfair advantage. Pros don't normally race for the best time possible, they race for the best finishing position. That's a big difference.

Drew Scott won Buffalo Springs overall beating the pros in 2012. He started with the AGers and had the fastest overall time.

I had a friend and former coach who was the first to cross the finish line at Syracuse 70.3 and got to hold up the 'tape,' but he ended up being a bit slower than a few other folks from waves behind him.
