Buying a car (Subaru Outback) very, very far away (Rochester, NY)

I think I found a new car. This one:

http://autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=190942905&dealer_id=57059052&car_year=2000&search_type=both&make=SUB&transmission=Manual&distance=0&model=SUBOUTBK&address=78749&make2=sel_one&advanced=y&certified=&max_mileage=&max_price=&bkms=1132422796917&min_price=&first_record=276&end_year=2003&color=&start_year=1981&drive=&isp=y&pager.offset=275&engine=&doors=&fuel=&lang=en&cardist=1434#vdptop[/url]

It's a 2000 Outback in Fairport, NY which is near Rochester, NY. I currently live in Austin, TX which is almost 2000 miles away. How should I go about trying to buy this car? Should I try to have someone that i know that lives in Rochester take a look at it? Then, have them take it to a mechanic that I specify to check it out? Now, if it turns out OK, should I send the seller a check for $500 as a deposit until I have a chance to go and pick it up? I plan on flying out there and then driving it back.

Just to let you know why I'm looking cars so far away, I'm pretty set on an Subaru Outback. My car is currently a 1990 Honda Accord that has 225k miles on it. It needs a new timing belt ($500) and the power steering fixed ($1200) among other unforseen problems that cost more than what the car is worth. My car is a coupe and it is a pain in the ass. I definitely need a 4 door and I want a wagon because I'm always wishing that I had the space. I just bought a house and I'm making two trips per week to Home Depot to get stuff and my little Accord isn't cutting it anymore. I've settled on the Outback, but the problem is that finding one in a stick shift is difficult. I've expanded my search nationwide to find the car of my dreams.

So, there you go. There's my story.

Thanks.

How much would you pay someone to drive it to you? My Dad lives in Rochester. Maybe you could work somethng out, or have him drive halfway, pay him for his time and fly him back.
I think shipping a car is about 2k. Have you had the car checked out? Rochester uses alot of salt during the winters.
I know there are slowtwitchers in Rochester. You could try and find enough of them along the way to relay your car down to you.
Rochester does have an Amtrak. Could they bring it down to you?
Anyway, my Dad's hobby is restoring old cars. If you haven't bought the car yet, you could pay him a small fee to go check the car out for you.
Good luck

If your dad drove it down to me, it wouldn't be any cheaper except for the fact I would be saving about 4 days worth of time. I would fly a friend up with me to keep me company and then visit a friend in DC on the way back. So, thanks for the offer, but it makes better sense for me to drive it myself unless I can get it shipped to me for less than $1000 by whatever means necessary.

Thanks.

I've looked for Outbacks with a manual transmission within 200 miles of Austin for the last year and none of them have turned out to be what I wanted. There is at most only 1 car that meets my criteria on the market at any given time. I expanded my search nationwide because I know that Outbacks are a lot more prominent in other parts of the country so that would increase my chances of finding one that fit what I'm looking for. Also, this one in NY is a really, really good price as well. If everything turns out OK on this car, I have no problems paying full price for it.

Google for car shippers. It is not $2K (especially if you're not in a hurry) And the dealer should be able to help you with it as well. They likely have a relationship with a shipping company

What is it you want? Polka dots and a zipper up the side instead of doors? I have purchased my last two Outbacks off the lot on the same day I walked into the dealer. The Outback is not that complicated by options, colors, etc.

Austin Subaru couldn't get you one? I bought mine (auto trans) in about an hour from them.

I'm not buying it from a dealer. I'm buying it from a private seller.

If you read my post, it's a used Outback model year 2000. This isn't a new car. Texas doesn't have many Subarus in it so it's hard to find one.

Thanks.

I guess it seems even more bizarre to travel that far to buy a USED car. What if you get there and it smells of cigarette smoke, or dog pee, or it doesn't start, or any number of other deal breakers?

That's why I'm trying to find someone in the Rochester area to go and take a look at it for me before I decide to buy it.

I wonder if there is a service or a mechanic that can be recommended for this type of this - for a small fee of course.

Do you have a carmax in your area? If this deal falls through, carmax will apparently ship a used car to a local store for you to look at. Good luck.
