NEO cassette / gearing question
I have a 10 speed bike on my current KICKR.... I use an 11 speed DA SRM on the too... with a 10 speed cassette. I use only ERG mode.

I am getting a NEO that will come with an 11 speed cassette.

Since I never change gears on the trainer... can I just put my bike on the NEO without changing the cassette? Or should I just switch the cassette to 10 speed?

If I use the NEO with the 11 speed cassette... I guess I should change the chain to 11 speed.

Thanks...

i would really recommend jsut switching to 10 speed casSette - by doing only erg workouts you miss on the fun part of the indoor training - like course mode - either for simulating course or for something like zwift. And since weight is not a problem you can get entry level 10 speed cassettes very cheap

Yup... I know... I bought it used, and it has an 11-28 Ultegra on it.

Do you guys know if the lock rings on the newer Neo's still require the Campy tool?? I heard the newer ones are Shimano...

I bought the 2017 Neo and the lock ring requires a Shimano tool.

Mine is a 2017 although purchased in November 2016. It still came with a Campy lock ring.

I replaced a Computrainer with it that I've used for over 20 years. I enjoy riding without needing to calibrate as well as the much more realistic inertia of the Neo. That said, I've been told that in Erg mode the Neo uses a lower inertia so it reacts more quickly. It's interesting that the British time trial specialists tend to shy away for training in erg mode as it's so unlike actual riding on the road.

YMMV,

I have the KICKR...so I get the whole ERG thing. I love it... I agree though...it is very different than being outside, since it requires no shifting.

IIRC the Kickr's flywheel provides only about the same inertia as about a 55lb all up weight i.e. rider plus bike when ridden in slope mode and a good deal less when ridden in Erg mode at slow flywheel speeds. So it's not at all like real riding. I know many athletes love erg mode but most of them also are the ones saying " for some reason I can't ride the trainer in aero for more than 5 minutes" The proper amount of inertia takes a good deal of weight of your crotch as you pedal. Try riding your Neo in slope mode aero see if you see how much more comfortable you are.
