Polyurethane degradation in running shoes

Wired did a deep dive into the degradation of polyurethane sneakers. Basically, organic molecules don't like moisture, heat, or light. After sufficient of any of these they crumble or melt.

How much does this affect my year-old runners? Inquiring minds would like to know. And if I *must* buy new shoes, then that's important too.
