They should have waiting to take action on a federal and/or national holiday so that their absence would have been halfway legitimate.
And that would have been a chickenshit protest.
Here's how I see it, Martin Luther King got fire hosed and went to jail for his convictions. These people can have their opinions and their protests but, as JSA said, actions have consequences.
What's ironic is that the whole idea of the protest was to show that without "immigrants" (read: "Hispanics") we'd be fucked. By taking the day off they wanted to show how much they were needed.
The reality that they were easily replaceable hit them right in the face. Not that I'm disagreeing with the major point you're making, but, the article says nothing about the workers being replaced, only fired, and even if they are replaced, there's nothing saying they weren't just replaced by other immigrants, legal or otherwise.
If they weren't replaced then why were they even there in the first place? And if they were replaced with with other immigrants (likely) it just shows that there is an endless string of immigrants willing to work.
As an aside (but relevant here) in order to do my job I have to close down the gas stations before I can start my work. People get often get pissed and many times people will say "oh please, I just need a little gas. Can I just some?"
Well, my reply usually goes something like "I'm sorry, I really can't let you..." If they persist I tell them that nobody else is getting any gas here either. If they contunue I simply say, "You are not special."
These people who got fired are not special.
