Did you expect anything different?

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Unfortunately this has been a common problem with all countries. Not just Rio.

I am sure that the issues with the Maracana Stadium are temporary as it is used for football (soccer) games and filled to capacity.

I visited Beijing 12 months after the Beijing Olympics. I tried to visit the water cube, but it was closed when I got there.

What else do you expect from a country that is half second world and half third.

"In the world I see you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Towers. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying stripes of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway." T Durden

The water cube had a water park added ... that was probably being built when you were there. Its slated to be used for Curling in 2022... guess it can be callled the ice cube.

Calling the US third world is a little harsh, but if the shoe fits ...

Atlanta's Herndon stadium

That is over 20 years old. Not a few months. And do you deny that Brazil is run much like a third world country?

I'm also going to add that that is Atlanta with the highest concentration of black middle class in the us. So you are a racist.

This argues strongly towards rotating the olympics between a handful of venues or choosing cities where the venues and infrastructure are already in place.

I know politicians like hosting the olympics but man they eat up a lot of tax money. Any place you aren't using and maintaining will start falling apart in short order.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I think the Olympics should be held in limited venue. I know some will bitch and moan about that, but the selection process is so corrupt and basically a corporate welfare giveaway or short term jobs program. Maybe just keep it in Athens, they need something don't they?

Maybe move the winter to someplace that is always cold.

Here is an idea. Perhaps you bid on a chunk of games. A 12 year block, so adequate return on investment can be reached.

Hell, our venues from the '94 Commonwealth games are still in great shape and see regular, heavy use.

Long Chile was a silly place.

I think in theory they are supposed to get continued use. But many of these countries have a poor populace. That populace doesn't take as good of care of public facilities and maintenance costly so places either fall apart due to lack of demand and corresponding maintenance.

I guarantee the basketball, track and field, swimming and other popular US sport venues from the Atlanta are well maintained.

I also believe many of the venues from the Utah winter games are maintained as well.

But most people in rio can't afford to use the venues and brazil can't really afford ot maintain it, since nobody is paying for their use, they aren't getting maintained.

Atlanta's Herndon stadium

You may want to do a bit more due diligence before posting. Herndon Stadium was built in 1948, not special for the Olympics, on the campus of Morris Brown. That school no longer has an athletics program, and no longer owns the stadium. The disrepair that the stadium has fallen into has nothing to do with the Olympics.

It was built in 1948. It was used by the Olympics, but it was not built as an Olympic venue.

I don't know, he is comparing the dilapidation of a venue used 20 years ago vs 6 months. Same points. He just sounds like a bigger idiot based on your post.

I agree. Security costs should be pooled and a rotation of cities for the Winter Games needs to be implemented. We are probably bidding on 2026 Winter here in Calgary.

They enclosed the pool at Georgia Tech. ACC swimming championship there right now. Lots of examples of a major games/championship creating legacy. That should be the norm and not the exception.

My exact thought. The way they look now was similar to days before the opening. Too much needed to be fixed. If I am not mistaken, that viallage is to be torn down to make room for night end housing.
