Darwin Award: riding your bike across one of the busiest highways in north america
Quote | Reply
Highway 401 - Toronto Canada

Toronto Star
It’s a little after noon on Monday and Wayne Edward is driving westbound on Hwy. 401, approaching Hwy. 427.
Suddenly, a cyclist heading against traffic swings off the right shoulder and cuts diagonally across four lanes of highway, performing a U-turn before hopping off his bike by the opposite guard rail.
Edward captured the whole unsettling scene on video with the dashboard camera in his flatbed tow truck.
“I saw the black car (beside me) was braking... so I did a quick mirror check to see if I could change lanes to give the black car room to move over,” said Edward.
“When I looked back that’s when I saw the guy darting across the highway.”
A fellow truck driver has seen the cyclist cross the highway before and believes he is trying to get to his workplace in the area, he added.

What an idiot! That is just so lazy and careless... I can't believe someone would think that's a viable option.

Ok, I'm in the USA, so are the Darwin Award rules different in Canada? My understanding is that you only get a Darwin Award for taking yourself out of the gene pool. You can't have kids. If you already have kids, then it's just an honorable mention.

If you don't die, then it's just entertainment...

In video #2 he pops a wheelie to make it to the other side.

Only fools never change their minds and I'll never change my mind about that.

perhaps with our infrastructure planning being auto-centric... this is why these events happen.

It makes you ask what kind of commute he must have if he's thinking the 401 is the better option.

This was an unsuccessful attempt (inadvertent or not) at achieving Darwin immortality... honorable mention worthy for sure...

It gave me shades of the Brazilian cycling team at the 2015 PanAms accidentally riding up onto the Gardiner, needing a police escort to get off... at least the Gardiner is usually clogged with traffic and moving more slowly... 401 is nuts...

I'm just thinking this route through. From the description it sounds like this is a semi-regular occurrence. The guy should absolutely not be doing this, but the area is also a ridiculously not bike-friendly.

Google Map of the area

If the guy is trying to cross from the area marked "golf club" to Erindale, the only other options are Renforth and 27 - I haven't ridden either of them, but from google street view, it looks like neither of which are at all suitable for cycling. Going further afield, Martin Grove isn't at all much better.

Still, I'd rather be on Renforth than the 401...
