The latest VeloNews magazine (print version) had an article on training using apps. It covered Sufferfest, Strava, TrainingPeaks, and Zwift but not TrainerRoad.

I wouldn't overthink it honestly.
My guess is that an editor told them to pick four, and that's where they stopped. Or, perhaps they were told to make it more exciting. Or...a million reasons.
I will say that once you get beyond a pretty number like 'Pick the Top 4 or Top 5', then you get into apps getting all wound up and ticked off you didn't include them for some reason or another. It becomes an avalanche of trying to include everyone.
