X2 on Greg brown. One of the best live shows I have every seen. Me and about 60-75 others on lawn chairs at a campground in central WI 1997. Night show with a bonfire

Agree. Greg Brown -- catchy, humorous, story-telling songs. Same with John Prine.

Old and (likely) dead? Or current?

One of the current guys I like is Willie Watson, who used to be in Old Crow Medicine Show.

My initial thought...

'Cause what the world needs now / Is another folk singer / Like I need a hole in my head
-Cracker

In reality I listen to a fair amount of 70's Rock that is probably considered folk...

You're the only one who understands the genre, so far.

How many folk singers does it take to change a light bulb?

Five - one to actually change it, and the other four to sing about how good the old one was.

Not a closet folkie, but can remember my parents spinning a lot of folk vinyl when I was a kid.

Peter, Paul and Mary
Dan Folgelberg
Bob Dylan
Joan Baez
Arlo Guthrie

just a few that come immediately to mind.

You guys are technically correct. I listen to many artists listed above but I don't listen to folk music so I don't really have a favorite I guess.

Dan Fogelberg

Denis Leary: Explain it to me. Heavy metal bands on trial because kids commit suicide, what is that about? Judas Priest on trial because my kid bought the records, and he listened to the lyrics, and he go into Satan... ALLALALALALALLALA! Well that's great. That sets a legal precedent. Does that mean I can sue Dan Fogelberg for making me into a pussy in the mid '70s, is that possible, HUH?

I think the criteria should be limited to anyone who appeared in the documentary Festival

Joni Mitchell

+1

And Neil Young and Dylan if you all consider them in the category.

For the old, dead ones, I'll go with Pete Seeger and John Hartford. Forget about Seeger's politics if you disagree. He and Hartford loved the music more than anything. And it showed in their performances and recordings.

Get Nanci Griffiths Other Voices Other Rooms

Don't know if I would consider him folk. He'd certainly draw a crowd at a folk revival concert, were he still alive, but I don't seem him as a fold singer.

But if he is, that means we also have to include Guy Clark in the mix.

Ever see the movie "Heartworn Highways?"

How do you know you are listening to a folk singer?

The introduction/backstory is of the song lasts longer than the song.

Not true. But if so, it'd mean Springsteen is a folk singer.

ELAINE: Andrea Doria? Isn't that the one they did the song about?

JERRY: (Correcting her) Edmund Fitzgerald.

ELIANE: I love Edmund Fitzgerald's voice.

JERRY: (Gives Elaine a look) No, Gordon Lightfoot was the singer. Edmund Fitzgerald was the ship.

ELAINE: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat.

JERRY: (Sarcastic) Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens.

Wasn't that the name of the boat?

Yeah

I loved that song as a kid. Never really understood or took time to understand the lyrics until recently, but its such a great tune. I love Gordon Lightfoot. I grew up listening to folk as my dad was a huge fan. Leonard Cohen, Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon (and Art), Neil Young so many others.
