I don't think sexual orientation was added to the federal list. Instead, people who are discriminated because of sexual preference can seek redress based on sex(gender) discrimination.

What slowguy said. Sexual orientation is not protected under federal law, but is in many states under state law. As slowguy mentions, there is a movement towards trying to claim it under gender discrimination. That has not yet worked at the appellate level, but some federal lower courts have entertained the argument.
