Hi
I have been a vegetarian for about 10 years now and have never found it a problem, I used an app called My Fitness Pal at the start to work out what I was eating but now I pretty much know what I need. My recovery from training sessions is quick and I always feel healthy

Been a vegetarian for 25 yrs now, no problems with energy source but can't compare to sport with meat diet, didn't do anything much back then.
Anyhow, like others said... if you expect tofu tastes like steak....forget about it.
It's totally different and a great source of protein usually common in Asian foods.
Seitan is closer to meat and is great too, just a different source.
I like the mock meat from time to time, there are good brands and things but that depends on individual taste.
Like said above....Meat is for pussies is a fun read and some good hints inside. The old music of the author is even better if you wanna get in race mode.

I would recommend looking at http://trimarni.blogspot.com/?m=1
Full disclosure, she and her husband are my coaches. She's a multiple time Kona qualifier and vegetarian...and has been for a majority of her life.
She also a registered dietitian. My wife is vegetarian, but I am not. I have worked a lot with Marni on my daily and performance based nutrition.
She makes things very simple and I have had significant success in terms of training and recovering from our work.

What do you eat before, during and after a hard training? I want to stay away from refined sugars...
I've been a vegetarian for about 18 years.
This morning I had a cliff bar and coffee pre-workout. I ran 9.5 miles and swam 1825 yards, and I had 100 cal shot bloks before the swim.
After I had 3 eggs and a mix of sweet potato puffs / french fries with ketchup.
refined sugar in ketchup, but to add french fries has refined oil which is worse.
I'm imperfect :P
your ONE flaw

Keep it simple. Dont over complicate things...
Pre AM Workout: Coffee with almond/coconut milk or heavy cream.
During: Water and/or electrolytes
After: Vegan protein shake with coconut water
Lunch: Rice with Veg, full fat yogurt. Or Oats with Fruit and full fat yogurt. Or Quinoa and Lentils with full fat yogurt.
Pre PM workout: Fruit (Banana)
During: Water and/or electrolyte
After: Dinner. Potatoes with Veg/Lentils/ fat Yogurt. Or Roti with Veg/Spinach/Lentils and fat yogurt.
Before bed: Chocolate :)
This is me in a nutshell. I'm also very heavy on the butters and oils, and feel it helps me feel fuller much longer. Plus, for me, its a way of eating that I enjoy. Lower(ish) carb, higher fat, plant based.
Hope this helps.
