Question for the LR Criminal Element

Need to pick a small cheap padlock. (don't ask, long story) Jason Bourne just sticks something in the lock and wiggles it around. Can I do the same?

No I don't have bolt cutters.

A locksmith once told me that older cheaper locks are usually harder to pick. But any skilled lock smith takes 5-10 minutes to pick a lock. In short, your average jack ass who bought a pair of lock picks isn't picking any locks quicker than that. Most probably quit carrying the lock picks after they see how tough it actually is. I once practiced for hours on a door knob I replaced. In short, no you can't just pick it. You need a pick and tension spring, otherwise it is random luck and I never got lucky. Padlocks are harder to since they aren't stable. Most just cut them.

"In the world I see you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Towers. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying stripes of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway." T Durden

you can pick a lock much easier than i'd thought possible

For Christmas last year our son got a lock picking set (off Amazon i guess). The set came with a 'practice' lock made out of clear Lucite, some picks and a rake. Once he had down the basics on the practice lock (you could see what was going on inside the lock) he very quickly went on to pick virtually ever padlock and door lock we had here on the farm. i was suprised at how easily he defeated even fairly pricey brinks type padlocks and master locks.

I've heard that if you pee on it first and then let it soak for 15 minutes, the lock is easier to pick.

If you have viagra in your system when you pee on it, will that make the lock harder, to pick?

Small sledge hammer will work on most padlocks.

I break padlocks about 2-3 times per month. I carry a small sledge. I call it the "skeleton key".

Bolt cutter or hack-saw will do it.
