Kimetto's second half is pretty damned amazing so I'd be surprised if they/ie Kipsang gets the record. Was hoping Bekele would be close towards the end.

Yeah I think if Kipsang gets his way he wins the race in next 5km and the record then is out of reach, if they come back it could be on, but Kipsang is too strong me thinks.

Bekele looks very comfy. If they go at each other could be a very quick time.

The above shots really give you an impression of what sub 3 min K's look like.

Yup I agree, the longer he leaves it plays into Bekele's hands.

Kipsang's surges have hurt him I think. Bekele making one surge which sticks?

AND...THREE guys over 50 under 2:30!!!! Are you KIDDING ME? That is just sick. There was also a 2:20 by a guy over 40! And a 50 year old woman ran a 2:55! The guys at the pointy end were incredible...but the AGers should get some props.

It took around 30 years from when Carlos Lopez took the marathon under 2:08 to 2:07.15 (Rotterdam 85). Now we're hovering right around 2:03. How long before humans can go sub 2?

This may be against Dan's rules posting this, but it's a good read Dev if you haven't seen it before:

I think the conversation is sub 2:02 in the next 5 years, but sub-2 is a long way off.

I'll ask my pharmacist and get back to you.

Personally I think we'd be in 2:05 range now if T&F wasn't so dirty.

Exciting to see Bekele break through with a huge race after some "struggles" early on (though he is probably the only runner in history where a 2:05 is less than his potential)

He's the king for sure. The fastest times ever in the 5k and 10k and now a marathon 6 seconds off the WR. Not to mention his cross country dominance and a nearly 8 year unbeaten streak in the 10k. At 34 he still has potential to go faster. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mid 2:01 if the stars were aligned. That said, I personally don't see a sub 2 from him. Though, if he's not the one to do it, I'm not sure any other current pro's have a shot. Most of the other top marathoners seem to be about at their potential. Farrah has dominated the track lately and has a good HM time, but a lot of his success stems from his ability to race well and use a powerful kick so I'm not sure he would transition as successfully as other stud 10k guys who made the jump like Bekele, Gebrselassie, or Tergat.

Seems legit.

Yesterday it was 23C in Berlin, maybe hotter on the tarmac. That 2:03.0x probably turns into a 2:02.30 if it was 8C? Thoughts?

Seems legit.

The guy who won in over 50 with a time of 2.26:32, is Martin Fiz, former European Champion, Word Champion and 4th in the Olympics in marathon. He is trying to win the six majors in the over 50 category, he has already won 4 of them. Next year, he will try to win Chicago and London.

He has an obscure past related to doping, he tested positive for testosterone in 1999 and had the same doctor as Miguel Indurain, Sabino Padilla.

Just a coincidence I'm sure; like Rominger & Armstrong.

23c as a high for the day, say 3pm? or 23c when Bekele finished, about 11:18am?
The start looked fairly cool - volunteers in jackets and such.

run well, run happy

You are right. 23C was the high. But it had to be high teens for the last hour. Not the optimal 8C range referred to in Salmon Steve's article.
