Hopefully the insurance company doesn't try to pass the buck.

think it was more a case of deer jumping into the triathlete than the triathlete riding into the deer (any proof in the pic it's a stag? :) )
plus, the triathlete got back on his bike and finished top 30 overall, which is a fair achievement

This almost happened to me last week! Deer was standing by the side of the road. Wary but not reacting to cars and people walking. Then I showed up on a bike and it positively freaked out (why is that? other animals do this too.) and the deer did the hop-hop out of danger maneuver. A few feet in another direction and it would have hit me.
Week before that was a large bunny. Almost caught the front wheel.

answering my own question, i'm guessing the antlers would suggest it's a stag

I have started commuting by bike once a week. About 15 miles of the commute is on a rail trail between towns in the dark. I ride with a headlight, but the trail is closed in with trees, so I don't get much light peripherally . Deer and rabbits are a big danger. There are some mornings when I see a couple dozen of each. I was worried about riding in traffic in the dark before I actually started the commute, but those spazzy animals are terrifying.
Reading the story does make me sad that I never had time to run in Phoenix Park when I was in Dublin, though.
Reminded me of this:
