Navy Olympian
Former teammate (back in the day at USNA) qualified to represent Guam in Rio on the mountain bike. I felt bad, but I had to point out to him that Peter Sagan (just wrapped up his 5th TdF green jersey) is going to be among his competition.

Pretty cool. One of the few guys I've met who makes me feel like a total slacker in almost every way. Valedictorian at Navy, Johns Hopkins Medical, completed his service, and now qualified for the Olympics at almost 40 years old while running his own ophthalmology practice. Races tris and obviously mountain.

Sounds like a cool guy.

And not to take away from your buddies achievement, but Sagan is crazy. As you said, wrapping up the green jersey and then heading out to the Olympics, for a different cycling discipline! Mental.

Or did he buy honorary citizenship?

In the Sochi Olympics there was a xc-skier who donated enough money to a small Caribbean country to get honorary citizenship. Him and his wife lived in NYC and both were able to compete under that countries flag, fully funded by themselves of course.

Not saying Slowguy's guy is a fake at all. Based on what Slowguy has said, sounds like the guy is the real deal. Just showing how people can compete under other countries.

He was born in Guam, and he now lives in Guam.

Guam competes as its own country for the Olympics, despite being a territory of the US. Has done so since the 80s.

I'd like to say they inspire me to be better, but no, I just kind of hate 'em.

I know he's looking forward to the racing, but I think he's mostly just hoping to enjoy the spectacle and experience. He'll get to march on during the opening and closing ceremonies, stay in the athlete's village (maybe not a treat), etc. Not sure if they get access to other events, but I'm sure he'll do some spectating as well.

Short video riding down a part of the road course, after he arrived in Rio and got his bike set up. Not a bad view.
