Watch the Tritonwear Promo...

These guys are providing data for lots of elite swimmers training for Rio. The only thing this Kickstarter has that they don't is the open water tracking. I am willing to bet that Tritonwear is more accurate. A good chunk of elite swimmers here in Canada have adopted it ... by 2017 I bet every elite program in North America is using it

Interesting thanks. Seems very high tech.

The features that I am curious about on the Marlin are the real time auditory feedback of your pace and heading/navigation in open water.

I filled out Tritons contact form and got a call within the hour ... right now they are doing team support only but said they will contact me when they start to do individuals. My son is swimming for a large club starting in the fall so I might go down that alley if they aquire the system.

I want to try the Marlin swim meter so I'm backing the Kickstarter project. I've been a silent reader here for quite some time and joined today to get and give feedback on the Marlin.

As a solo swimmer I don't have a coach, so the closer I can get to a 'directed' workout where all my focus and efforts can be on swimming without distractions, the better.

What is a distraction? Memorizing a workout, or printing it and 'managing' it poolside. Being able to see pace clocks at both ends of the pool. Having to de-fog goggles to see the pace clock. Count and keep track of laps (I'm older). Judge my own pace and head calc split times compared to workout targets. Self analyzing my workout while keeping track of it.

I expect the Marlin will remove most all of these distractions. Just enter the workout ahead of time, press start, listen and swim, pause it at anytime if needed (mid pool collision?), stop, and download a ton of data.

During the workout I'll get live pacing and split times, as it happens, and I won't have to look at a swim watch (if I can see it).

Real learning happens with real time feedback. Even a coach can't give you that, even if he has the remote data.

Hopefully the Marlin will succeed it's initial funding hurdle and can look at adding even more features. I Sure would like heart rate monitoring with target settings, or voiced stroke improvement reminders, or maybe they will be for the Marlin 2.0 version. This Marlin version is inexpensive enough that I'm going to stop waiting for perfection.

More swimming, less distraction, better value for my time invested.

I for one am interested to hear how you like it and to see what becomes of it.

Yes Pete, if I receive a Marlin I will mostly definitely report back, even sooner if I can get on their testing program!

I was pleased to hear that they're working to expand the Marlin Session Trainer with third party training programs, Paul Newsome, of Swim Smooth is one of the first to receive a Marlin prototype for review.

Here's a link to Paul's review:

A couple of updates on the Marlin Kickstarter project:
  • Update #6: Marlin Campaign Success! 170% Funded
  • After the campaign, preorders will be available on the online store and the prices are still heavily discounted. Here is a link to the Platysens online store.
  • Hands-on: The Marlin GPS Swimming Tracker, a video review by DC Rainmaker.

Overall, for a $90 device on Kickstarter ($150 at retail), I’m pretty impressed with it. I like the assortment of buttons on it, and the audio feedback is super clear, both for general use confirmation (i.e. which mode you’re in), but also while swimming openwater. Not to mention that they’re still 4-5 months away from shipping, and this feels like they’re closer to 45-60 days of polish.
  • Platysens has offered to send me a protoype next month for testing and feedback.

It's been a while, but how have you liked the Marlin? I'm seriously interested in getting one because I'm sick of doing 5km open water swims and adding an extra 4-500m when the bouys are a kilometre apart and the tide is pushing me. Open water swimming is rapidly becoming one of very favourite things, so anything I can use to assist in going straight so I can put my focus on swimming harder is very welcome.

I was thinking if you're swimming a 400, 800, etc you could could use it to check your pacing.

That's why pace clocks should be located on the right side near the end of the pool so you can read them at a quick glance after a turn. Do a little math in your head between laps and you should know where you should be coming off the wall.

DO NOT do the math in your head, that is dangerous! Doing math in your head is known to the state of California to cause math cancer. That's why you need a digital clock with your workout pre-programed in so every single interval starts at 0:00 and you just have to peek to that side after a turn to see how your doing. Man I miss college swimming, I was so spoiled.
