Video: The raw sounds of training Camp

Hey everyone. I wanted to share this on the message board and open it up to questions if you have any. I've been wanting to do this project for a while now, and the training camp I did in Saarbrucken, Germany prior to Hamburg WTS was the perfect opportunity. Everything was incredibly simple there and it was the perfect time to strip away all the things that can make our sport complicated and get back to basics. I went with the same approach for the video.

I really hope you dig it!

Enjoyed the different perspective! Also liked your onboard bike from Hamburg, pretty cool to see the surges out of all the corners.

Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy all of your videos. The on-board race ones with the power display are obviously pretty cool but my favourites are the artsy-story-teller ones. Thanks again for taking the time.

Hey Bill, thanks for saying that! I really pour everything I have into the stories and they're what I enjoy sharing the most. They don't tend to be nearly as popular though, but hearing the positive feedback makes it worth how much time they take. I just want to get people stoked on triathlon and help the sport grow!

12 minutes eh!? Wow that would be quite the undertaking. Usually everybody preaches keeping things shorter, so I've been slowly cutting these down from about 6.5 minutes for the first one I ever did. Maybe I should put out some "computrainer versions" that use a lot more of the race..

Well, diff strokes and all that but i think 12 min is a reasonable length for a video that tells a story. In any case, you're doing great work!!!

Hey Eric,

Your videos are the best, I'm always excited when a new one pops up on my YouTube feed. I saw this when it posted earlier and was impressed by the time you took stage the shots, knowing you probably had many more that didn't make the cut. The sound of my breathing, the hum of my tires, the silence of the water are all things that center me and I thought you captured that well. Keep up the good work on both ends of the camera.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the nature of your injury this year? I know you were bitten, but don't know the specifics. Hopefully, it is behind you.

Hi Scott,

This one definitely took some patience, you're right. I shot it over the course of a week because I don't have a super high tolerance for shot setup. Up until this video I pretty much refused to stop riding or running to shoot video, so my shot selection was pretty limited. Track workouts definitely open things up a bit more, and since I was on my own in Saarbrucken, I could stop occasionally on the ride, just add more time on the back half, and not piss off any training partners!

My injury was pretty complicated. I have pinched nerve of some sort in my back that creates pain randomly in my left leg. The compensation patterns I built up in order to avoid some of that pain just caught up with me early this year. Ultimately, I had disengaged my glute and hamstring on the left side, cocked the left hip forward, and my TFL +glute med were getting massively overworked. That led to IT band tendonitis in my knee and boom. End of running.

The positive thing is that I was running pretty well only using about a third of the muscles in my left leg, so now that things are coming back online, I'm psyched for more improvement!

This is by far one of my favorite videos of triathlon. It is goes to the core of what we do—that last cut is the freaking best. That silent moment after you absolutely turned yourself inside out, your body is spent, but your mind is still there. Love it, man. Thank you.

It definitely struck a chord. I was feeling down and was going to skip the early morning trainer workout. The video was enough motivation to get it done. Thanks for the great video, and keep them coming!

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the details. You'll have a Ph.D in physiology with that injury chain! Not an education we want, but one we all get nonetheless. You must be in good hands to have that type of diagnosis.

Again, thanks for the videos. You are a great example of enjoying the lifestyle and keeping it fun. Stop by Slowtwitch anytime!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. When I watch a video that gets me stoked, sometimes I have to jump up halfway through and go for a ride. That's my goal when I make something, and to hear that I'm getting close is awesome!

Scott,
I've got an incredible physio in Portland, Dr. Chris Ramsey at P.A.C.E. Anytime something is majorly wrong, I head "home" and go see him several times a week until we've resolved the problem. I have yet to have something he couldn't get to the bottom of and ultimately bring me back from stronger and smarter. Having the right team in place makes all the difference.

Great video. You have a skill for capturing these things and I watch every video you produce. You have respect for being a great Triathlete and a great Producer. I can see the big screens calling on you for Professional advice should they ever get on board with Triathlon. Keep them coming and keep kicking ass out there.
