"Over the last few months I have become very big on the French."
If your wife finds that out she might want you back. ;^)

I dated a very nice French girl for a while and have been to France many times.
Based on what I know about France, like all countries and nationalities, you simply can't make generalizations.
That said, I consider myself a Francophile.

Read Celine:
Death on the Installment Plan
Journey to the End of the Night
Published just before WW2, then again after WW2.
Just the same dude trying to get out of WW1 alive, traveling the world, getting sick a lot, working as a doctor in the slums, chasing girls, going nuts ... Two of the best books ever written. Very controversial style at the time (lots of cussing and jargon I guess). Nihlistic, filled with great aphorisms and often hilarious: Brilliant.
Huge influence on the Beats and many others.

Alright;after my fairly annoying commute;no training;chinese take out and 3 large glasses of a rather obnoxious but nonetheless satisfying red I have the following to contribute.France;or rather the French, have contributed tremendously to the world(outside the sphere of warfare)however they seem to have lost the plot of late(read;last decade)under rather dubious management.I would not presume to know what the solution to their current malaise is but I'll give you a clue it's not the US model....we are borrowing massively from the future on both a personal and government level and anyone who thinks we can 'grow' our way out of the resulting deficits is just missing the plot.HOWEVER where the US can help the French is with the zero tolerance policy on crime.......lock these fruitcakes up and give the hardworking people a chance to run their businesses.....glass no. 4 and no I don't give a shit about your opinion.........errrrrrr thats it.

it's a lovely place to visit, and ultimately, you'll learn more that way. french is a culture best absorbed whilst making love, eating or drinking... or better yet, doing all three at once.
