I'm sure some alarmist will cry fowl, but this seems like the new West Nile virus, which was the new SARS, which was the new ebola, which was the new. . .

Somehow I think that with our advanced medical knowledge and understanding of disease we'll be a little better off than they were in the early 1900's.
The bubonic plague has killed millions of people too, but I'm not too worried about it anymore.

The H5N1 virus is actually a potentially huge problem. Of course, it has to mutate to be transmissible between humans, but that's considered a likelihood (and some people don't believe in evolution).
It appears that Bush doesn't want to get caught with his pants down again, because this has been on radar for years. It would be bad if thousands of taxpayers died from this, while the HHS secretary is saying "we had no idea this could happen", while the NIH and various academics would be saying otherwise.
Although somebody did just point out that Donald Rumsfeld holds a considerable amount of wealth in Gilead, the maker of Tamiflu, the antiviral for H5N1. Interesting.

Why compare the two? Not the same thing.
Unless I'm missing something, it's the government's job to react to any threat. The on going terrorist problem. Bird Flu and Mad Cow may not be proven to be widespread. But why wait? If there's a contagious disease that kills, nipping it in the bud is the most obvious thing to do.
Imagine if the leadership just ignored it and then people started to contract it and die. Then there would be an outcry of why them damn useless *&%^$ SOBs elected in couldn't do their frikin job because they're too busy taking holidays and raising campaign funds etc etc. Yup it's just the same-same-samo. damn if you do and damn if you don't, unrestrained free speach syndrome. There will always be critics voicing it out no matter which course of action is taken.
That's actually OK as long as it doesn't interfere with the application of the policies needed to be applied. Particularly in regards to the terror threats.
Hey Case, if you want to throw out your tele, you can throw it my way. Preferably it's a plasma. :)

"I found it somewhat amusing the language in the speech made it sound like another attack on Iraq. I guess if that kind of language got him up in the polls once, why not try it again."
Did you ever consider that, that is just the way the man delivers his speeches? No matter what subject he's on? -:)
Compared to others it ain't that bad.
It's not the quality of the speech but the willingness to do what needs to be done that's important. So why get worked up about that presentation that was really just to announce preventive measures to a potential threat?
