Olympic OW Swim - Weinberger @ Kits Pool
At Kit's pool (Vancouver) yesterday between some meetings and there was a video shoot on deck. Quick glance, I thought it looked like Richard Weinberger & sure enough it was. 2012 OW 10K race in London he was on the podium.

I dove in and got a chance to swim beside & observe. First off - just a lot of power and ability for sustained turnover. Muscles built-up and configured for the event so you'd expect that. Nothing really remarkable in his stroke. He has the ability to obtain and sustain that look of lift & wake behind the body that is typical of sprinting speeds. At less than 6 feet (they say 6' but that is a stretch) he's shorter stature so actually reminds me a lot of my son Logan.

His cruising speed is ~ 3:00 mins on two lengths (one lap) at 280M +/-.

He did the typical stuff that our TSUN club would do, Kick sets/Pull sets, intervals (main set), fly with fins down, choice back. I think he swims 5-10K per day.

I came away thinking you gotta LOVE to swim to be on that workout schedule.

He swims there often during the summer.
From what I've heard, he actually doesn't do a whole lot of OWS
Pretty cool to have someone like that out training in our backyard.

what a beautiful stroke...his timing is spot on. Close to perfect breath timing and great turnover.
thanks for the video!

I had a chat with the AB Provincial coach who ran last summers national open water camp. Said the plan was for Richard was swimming at Kits a fair bit leading into Rio. Sounds like Steve Price whistling at him.

Mr. Weinberger was back at it today in Kits pool, coming off a 3rd place finish at the Fina 10K in Hungary. He was lapping with a UBC Thunderbird "domestique". My guess is practicing positioning, drafting, changing of line and sprints to the wall. Pretty cool to watch.

I had a hard time keeping up. Then again, they were wearing fins and I had just come back from a session of IMS (dry needles), so was taking on a bit of water.

Weinberger has a great stroke, as you would expect. Too bad your video isn't a little longer but even in just 41 sec it is obv that he is very strong, has a great stroke, and excellent turn-over rate. Just swim like this guy and don't bother with that kick board strapped to your chest. :)

Funny you should mention that. After swimming beside Richard, I imprinted his stroke (in my brain) then replicated it back at the lake. Here's a split screen, first take too. He's a left breather though. And I'm not getting that upper back to rotate nearly as much. Had the PT wrapped up on my chest, full body weight, trying to free up a couple of vertebrae this week. Good thing shes only 120lbs if that :P

The kick board trick is for the rest of Kits pool, mid-week afternoon swimmers. Back to the lake tomorrow - yay! (Sorry about the image size, iPhone upload)

I think your brain imprint worked pretty well as your stroke looked pretty good in that split screen video. :)

I'm in Vancouver for vacation. I hope you guys realize how incredible this place is...

Ran to Kits pool and swam there this morning. I saw some of those UBC Thunderbird folks you mention, as well as a guy on deck in a Speedo/ maple leaf jacket with a watch. They seemed fast. Lots of people seemed fast, but not exclusively for fast folks.

Do any pro triathletes train there? Sounds like Victoria is a big base - how about Vancouver?

Say hi if you see me this weekend - tall guy, green cap, red goggles, getting passed by UBC folks...

JOOC, is that Kits pool heated??? It looks awfully big to be heated but OTOH it seems that the water up there in Vancouver might still be pretty cold in late June. Any idea on the water temp when you swam this morning???

Heated fer surely! I think the board said 78 F, but I may be remembering tha wrong.

Very pleasant for swimming - not so warm that you can't push, but comfortable. Worst part was getting out...

Yeah set at 75 degF, there is a heater and smoke stack at the side of the pool. I start to feel a bit of chill after more than an hour.

Some more info about Kits:

1. Kits pool is a salt base and changes your buoyancy by lifting your chest more. It is more difficult to swim in Kits pool than a regular pool. I was chatting with a HUUB/Multi-sport store athlete. She said that this year they changed the mix to make it less salty. & here I thought I was getting better!

2. 5:40am weekdays, fastlane swimming, a legendary morning swim club, run by "KC". Workout board, coaches at both ends and great group of swimmers. I got stroke correction tips, straight up no asking, when I was doing a fly set. They should have kicked my a$$ outta there for being late to practice. It was raining, but a still the full group of swimmers. You might be able to ask if you can join. Great workout.

3. I think they go for coffee at Cafe Zen post swim.

4. Use the stamp at the exit (I hit my calf) so you can come back in later in the day - no charge.

I am on the Island this week, racing back-back weekends.

There are a few pros that train here. Vancouver is a great training environment (amazing running, swimming in the summer) but not very affordable. It's much more economical for a full time pro to train in Victoria so most that train here will work full time.

That said, Elliott Holtham, Nathan Killam, Dylan Gleeson, Jeff Manson and Rachel McBride all do live and train here. Jeff Symonds trained here for a couple of years up until September. He's in Victoria now.
