How Many Miles on a Bike

Questions for Bike experts.....

What is the life span of a moderately maintained tri bike? I have about 70,000 on my '04 Cervelo P2K - its been totally rebuild and painted once - most all components replaced many times.

I ask as I have recently noticed a fair amount of creeking when I ride that I just can't get to stop. Is it time to get a new ride? I do love the bike.

thx

Creeking is so hard to identify without additional info. I think if you get 12 years out of a bike, you can guiltlessly get a new frame at this point.

It depends ...

Do you want the answer to give to your wife to justify a new bike purchase?

Or the real answer?

(just had a brilliant business idea. For a small fee a "certified bike evaluator" will tell you that your bike is in need of replacing, which you can then show to your wife)

While I cannot answer to the lifespan of the bike. I have chased squeaks/creaks all over my bikes and I would say most of the time it is the saddle rails/collar/post slipping. When not any of those it has been the bottom bracket.

On mine the rear wheel has been a little loose in the rear dropouts. Otheres has been the BB, cranks, or wheel bearings. It's only the frame if its' cracked.

Maybe it's time to strip it down and rebuild it. Maybe even upgrade the components.

maybe take a look at the bottom bracket threads for the source of the creaking. If the frame isn't cracked or misaligned there is not reason not to keep using it. I ride a very old bike and over time the rear wheel has started to slip in the dropouts and the seatpost requires a shim to keep from slipping. And the tubes are starting to rust too...

That bike owes you nothing.

Get a new one, ride it hard and often;
and keep the old one as a spare/crappy day ride.

float , hammer , and jog
