The reality is they probably never got to implementing the cuts and will likely see the grievous error they made with that cut.

Not possible. The reality is that the electoral map is being supposed to redrawn ever 2nd election. 6 to 10 seats may be reallocated to the urban areas. While the NDP may burn bridges that redistricting will hurt the Wild Rose.

Despite what Craig Oliver says on CTV News - Notely's head is about 5 feet up her ass for the most important part of the emergency, starting with calling Brian Jean a fear mongerer over the fire risk. Not sure of the exact time line, but his house was gone within 24 hours of her accusation. This is Notely's GW Bush moment.

I was in Fort McMurray at the No. 5 Firehall until 1 pm on Wednesday. A new fire to the southwest of that area forced those of us remaining to move south. That firehall was the designated command centre until then. It was temporarily moved out to the Nexen Project south of town, but has since returned to the No. 5 station.

It is a devastating fire to be sure, but the misinformation and "I heard from this guy" innuendo doesn't help. I am currently staying in Edmonton for the next while, and a nice older gentleman told me my neighbourhood was gone. I politely corrected him and told him about 80% of the structures in town are still standing. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

We live in the boreal forest. There have been large forest fires occurring here for centuries. This is how coniferous forests regenerate. Unfortunately, parts of our city were in the path of this one.

I'm fine, thanks for asking. There are many people without adequate resources to carry on for too long, and as usual, fellow Albertans are ready to help. I am in awe of the generous offers of assistance from individuals, businesses, and other organizations. I am also impressed with the generosity of other Canadians and people from other parts of the world.

Thank you to you and all other people from Edmonton, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain and other areas for helping us. I apologize for turning Edmonton traffic into Vancouver traffic for the next little while. Edmonton is once again the City of Champions.

The people of Edmonton and the surrounding communities have been absolutely outstanding in so many ways. There are a few twats that pop up on this site and other social media, but they are quickly forgotten by people with more depth, intelligence and compassion.
I will likely buy all my running shoes from Fast Trax as long as I live in Alberta. I have bought runners there before, but this business went above and beyond to help get anyone who needed runners new shoes. I and several people from Fort McMurray have several stories from other businesses that are similar.
I'm sitting in an apartment on Jasper Ave. overlooking the river valley. Nice view.

I hope the rest of Canada pays attention to how badly the NDP has worked in AB... especially BC... Horgan is a smooooooth talker, but he's a slimey fucker. I actually sat beside him at a wedding reception a couple years ago, so much fake charm, I felt dirty.

Is a recall possible in AB?

I guess you guys didn't learn from Ontario's NDP provincial government led by Bob Rae.

How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

"I guess you guys didn't learn from Ontario's NDP provincial government led by Bob Rae. "

Don't get me started on Bob Rae. At the time I owned a commercial building with the upstairs rented to the provincial government. When Bob and the NDP took over all of a sudden they decided that all government office buildings must be handicap accessible, meaning he wanted to me to put a $50 K elevator into a two story office building that was a converted house which back then might have been worth $200 K tops. When told I couldn't afford that they pulled the gov office out of my building and went into a strip mall (which pissed the gov employees off since my office was much nicer) and continued to pay me for the next nine months of the lease duration instead of waiting until the lease ran out before moving. Another guy in town had the same thing happen but he was paid for another 18 mos on his lease. This happened all over the province with landlords and was at a time of a very bad recession in Ontario. Not like Bob was paying for the empty leases, the tax payers were on the hook. I just turned off the heat and lights and hung a sign outside saying "rental space available in nine months" since legally I couldn't rent it until their lease ran out and continued to collect my monthly rent check.

The problem with the NDP IMHO is that they mean well and philosophically I've often been supportive, but whenever they get into to power its amateur hour since their MP's are mostly unionists, teachers, etc and have no clue about basic economics so they spend, spend, spend in stupid ways trying to make every special interest group happy.

Sorry, I was hoping we could get away from shitting on the NDP which BTW is my favorite topic. Especially since our experience is pretty much mirroring your previous experience with a few completely insensitive assholes in the mix.

That is pretty much full-on awesome, and about what I would expect on a military flight.

So I`ve noticed. But IMHO where the NDP has usually shined is in minority government situations when they as the 3rd vote hold the balance of power and keep the Cons and Libs honest. Unfortunately whenever they get elected they seem not able to walk the talk.

I think you were once a member of the RCMP, weren't you? In my fourteen years in Fort McMurray, I have met several members of the force. Some of them don't look old enough to drive, but all the men and women I have met have been great people. They were on their game this week up there. I know people love to shit on them for the actions of a few, but our local RCMP were a major factor in evacuating 80,000 people on the only road out safely.

Yes, I know quite a few of them up there, and they are all good people, some of the most dedicated, hardest working people I have ever known. I know a few firefighters up there too.

Some have been there for years, others just got there, but all went there prepared to work their asses off. A fire like this takes it to a whole new level, but I am not surprised that pretty much everyone there has risen to the challenge.

They're reporting the fire as held in places today and with the cooler weather and in some cases in the NW part of the province at least a late spring snow fall is being reported. (Valleyview I've heard for example).

A bit of a silver lining for some, some species of edible mushrooms thrive post wild fire. A 2015 article here...

We had a few decent sized fires here in the last couple years, and everyone around here are selling morels now. The local experts say it takes 2 years, but there seem to be quite a few coming from last years burn.

Honestly, I only knew from passing through new burns in Saskatchewan that mushroom picking post wildfire was a big thing for some people. Can't remember the exact name of the fire but it was in the late 90's somewhere between La Plonge and Beauval. Lots of vans and cars parked in groups, was told by locals it was mushroom pickers.
