Painful lump under ball of foot below pinky?

I have a hard lump(like callus but under the skin). It's slowly getting worse. It's seems running aggravates it or if walk on it a certain way. Is this a plantar wart or what else could it be?

I had similar symptoms for over 6 months.and finally went to my GP who sent me to a foot specialist. They took Xrays and told me the pain was being caused by a bunionette. They wanted to sell me a $300 set of othotics they said would surely help the problem. Long story short, some very aggressive reduction of the callus above the lump under the skin revealed a tiny piece of glass causing the irritation. Once that was out I was at 100% the next day. IIRC Jackmott had a similar situation with an imbedded bit that was in more than a year.

Hope it's that easy for you.

More likely a skin lesion of some sort and not a bony pathology (nor Morton's neuroma)

Could certainly be a plantar verruca (wart) and easy enough to treat. More likely a keratoderma or porokeratosis (both good Googling things for you).

Thanks. Its on the inner side of the ball of foot....about 1 inch from pinky. It's not bony feeling but more like a callus growing under the skin. I could feel it biking today. It seems to get aggravated on the bike for some reason.

Initially read your subject as "Painful lump under balls"... That would not be good...

Unlikely to be Morton's neuroma. I had an almost identical problem last year, suggested Morton's Neuroma to the doctor and he said that they only ever form in the gap between the big and scond toe, or second and third toe.

Mine turned out to be Tenosynovitis and it took an ultrasound to diagnose it, it's definitely worth looking into as an possibility.

I was actually thinking about reaching out to the ST experts on something quite similiar. I have a small skin lesion (looks like a tiny wart) dead center on the ball of my left foot. It's alright biking but walking barefoot and even running in shoes makes it an uncomfortable hotspot almost immediately. What's there to do with it? I haven't been running so it's not a problem but it will become one later this summer.

Porokeratosis plantaris discreta - Shave that sucker down with a razor blade or pumice stone. Can "pluck" that center core out if possible and will feel much better. Likely to return with chemocautery/surgery or removal, but easy enough to deal with on your own

I was having a similar issue a few years ago. When I went for a run it got progressively worse. Turns out it was a clogged sweat gland. As I was running it was basically filling like a balloon. I've started having them again recently.

Podiatrist recommend Kerasal to get the skin softened and things flowing again.

You could quite possibly have a plantar wart. These are rough, grainy skin growth that resemble the shape of cauliflower. They feel and look similar to calluses. Two key things to look for during self-diagnosis to distinguish between plantar warts and calluses:

1. Tiny black dots peppering the center of your
2. Disruption of skin striae (footprints)

If you happen to notice little black dots in the center of your rough skin patch then you have a plantar wart. These are tiny blood vessels feeding the infection. If these rough skin patches also disrupt your normal footprint pattern, that is another sign you have a wart. Calluses allow the normal foot striae to continue along the surface whereas plantar warts do not.
