BIG QUESTION: Which game box to buy?
Looking for the best choice game machine to buy for the twins this Christmas.

They just turned 5, so we're looking for something that will play kids' games and do it well. DVD play is a plus, but they already have a cheap DVD player for their TV. Mommy won't be playing it at all, and Daddy will be playing it very little.

Cost is somewhat of an issue.

So, what should it be?

(A) Sony PS2
(B) XBox
(C) XBox 360
(D) Game Cube
(E) Two GameBoys
(F) Two Nintendo DS's
(G) Something from EBay?
(H) Anybody wanna TSR me the one they replace at Christmas? :)

I call bullsnot. =)

I would go with the PS2. I have an XBOX and they don't have half the game selection that PS2 has (not a big deal for me, I buy older games and play the snot outta them). PS2 has a Power Rangers game, which is a clincher for us.

We are also getting our son a PS2 for Christmas (a combination gift from family). We are limiting how many gifts he gets this year. Past couple years grnadparents and aunts/uncles have gotten ridiculous with the gifts. PS2, a few games, buncha clothes from grandma and that's it.

5 year olds.... video games... triathlon forum. Disconnect all around. That said, I really would like to check out the new madden and GTA san andreas. But I don't have a TV....

Seriously, wouldnt a five year old prefer one of those "wonders of learning" techno gizmos you can get at toys r us or discovery store? What do I know? When I was a kid....

How about a Mac mini? There is a lot of educational software you can buy for it and a bunch of games as well.

Due to more kids games, games for all ages, fun games - Gamecube = best for kids.

My kids (7 & 5) like Game Cube; they like the Mario Party games. We also have a PS2 for hubby so he can play those EA Madden football games. I have nothing to do with either.

Soccer?

Is that the sport they play in other countries? =)

That's the biggest difference between kids today and when I was a kid (I'm 32).

No one outside of Chicago Suburbs and St. Louis played soccer, now it seems everyone does at some point.

We have every sports ball imagineable .. and seemingly switch "favorite sports" as often as we (myself, my4yo son, and 18mo daughter) switch "favorite superheroes".

The game machines are great for us whenever it gets dark and/or cold, after dinner, when mom & dad need some time to clean up and get everything ready for the next day (iron clothes, prepare meals for work, etc), and get everyone ready for bed.

I'd much rather they play a video game (incredible problem-solving skills) than sit there staring ata movie.

I never played soccer a day in my life, but I agree that a soccer ball is one of the best gifts a kid can get. My wife thinks we take them outside and "tire them out". I know better, those little boogers are "building endurance".

yup and 5hrs later you're draggin your stiff-necked-blood-shot-eyed body to bed after finally prying the controller from your hand and giving up trying to save the planet as the Master Chief in HALO(2).

My Vote XBOX 360 - 6 person HALO multi-player battles on XBOX live with another father-son team. is the shizzznit

(Re: Soccer balls)

They already have, like, five. Three of them regulation size. They LOVE them. When they're not playing "Triathlon" with daddy on their bikes, that is...

The game machine is for rainy days, nearing-bedtime-chores, and other times like that...

And as a "carrot" they can earn for doing extra stuff... "Kids, clear the yard of toys if you want to earn your 1/2 hour of Game Boy tonight..."

As someone else said... it beats TV...

Oh, and we got them one of those "V-Tech V-Smile" games... the SECOND one we got died in just a few weeks... piece of JUNK.

They also have Leap Pads, but are only just now getting interested in them...

Yeah, we got a V-Smile for Christmas.

That was interesting ... until he played Batman on XBOX.

On one machine you can move left, right, and jump with poor graphics ... on the other you can do 60 different combinations of attacks with great graphics.

Oh well, Little Girl (180mo) might play the V-smile someday.
