The point is not so much that polygamy is a horrible thing, it's partly to demonstrate the hypocrisy of most people in favor of gay marriage. And partly to demonstrate that if we allow changes in the definition of marriage, it's quite difficult to come up with any rational explanations to limit the definition in any way whatsoever.
Remember it is legal in certain areas of the country.
