I am currently counseling a Boy Scout troop for "Citizenship in the Nation" merit badge. One of the requirements is to "...choose a speech of national historical importance." The Scouts are supposed to read the speech, find out about the author, why the speech was important, etc.
I have downloaded and reprinted for them:
Gettysburg Address, Abraham Linclon
Request for Declaration of War, Franklin Roosevelt
Inaugural Address, John F. Kennedy
Remarks at Brandenburg Gate, Ronald Reagan
One of the reasons I have chosen these four is because they all have memorable taglines:
"...government of, for, and by the people shall not perish from this earth; ...a day that will live in infamy; ...ask not what your country can do for you; ...tear down this wall."
Any other suggestions?
