Bush's Approval Level
Latest AP poll has him at 44% approve, 54% disapprove. Approval is at 42% for the economy and 38% for issues like education and health care. And support for the president's approach to his top domestic priority, Social Security, remained at 36 percent, while 58 percent oppose it. http://www.washingtonpost.com/...A36353-2005Apr8.html

As should be no great shocker, there's a very clear linkage between increases in gas prices (inverse) and his approval ratings.

At the risk of being perceived as a supporter of Bush, I should remind you that correlation does not imply causation. His approval rating is probably a result of world events that also affect the price of gasoline (like war in the Middle East, etc.).

That is a distinct possibility, but the mere fact that most Americans view there to be a causation in that it causes their lower approval ratings suggests that it might be.

The "progress" of the war is another element to it all, which is interesting in and of itself. Most people approve of our actions, yet don't think Bush has a good way to get our troops out. But since most people think he's doing a good job there, it's a tough sell to say the war in Iraq causes high oil prices and a low approval rating.
