We've found such a ridiculously small number of fossils (~1,000,000 for a guess) that it's no surprise that there are many gaps in the record. There might be a thousand bat fossils in existence. Spread over, say, 50My doesn't cover very much.

We have lots of car accidents every day. We have very few films of these accidents. Yet we can deduce from the evidence what happened. Same with evolution. To say "we have no explanation" is silly.
