food intake for HIM: how much, how often?

Hi.

I've done mostly sprint and olympic tris and am about to take the leap into doing my first HIM (on a rather difficult bike course) in about a month and I'm interested to hear some suggestions about typical amounts (and what type) of food to ingest and how to get it all down.

It probably varies from person to person but I've read that intake should be ~ 400 calories per hour ... which, if you take in just gels would be almost 4 per hour ... this seems like a lot. These could be supplemented with bars and of course will be accompanied by some sort of sports drink for some additional calories.

Can you survive on just gels and sports drink?

I'll probably be out there for 5.5 to 6 hours. Would appreciate any tips.
