Ironman North America hasn't been mailing out race packets lately. They'll usually post the Spectator's Guide and the Athlete's Handbook online at least a couple of weeks before the race. I know that the LP Spectator's Guide is up already. The general rules are the same for each IM, so if that is what you are curious about, you could get the IM-CDA handbook and look at that.

You have to pick up your packet/race number in person at the site so they can verify your ID.

I'm mainly interested in finding out what my race number is. I've found the IMLP Forum site absolutely useless.

They will put race numbers up on the main IMLP site, but not until about 10 days before the race.

Since the forums are now closely monitored and regularly cleansed of any controvercy or IMNA criticism, they have become pretty vacant, rendering them as you say pretty 'useless'.
