From Life Long Couch Potato to sprint tri in 10 months
Quote | Reply
Ok, at Mr Tibbs request I will begin this thread here. Personal history first.

Life long couch potato / computer nerd. In HS use to ride my bike about 20 miles out to my girlfriends (but once the police said I could have my license back I got back in my car till they took it again)

30 minute walks with my wife about the length of my endurance and at her pace I actually get some knee pain then.

Older brothers still call me porker. In the past 4 years have tried to get in shape and lose weight from 240 to 190 and back and forth. Fastest weight loss was this past summer went on Atkens got to 189.5 without any exercise. Well Im back at 230. Clearly this is not working. I have three girls all under 8 my Angles (Gee maybe I should change my user id to Charlie).

Need to get in better shape. I am a very arrogant person so in December started telling people I was going to do a sprint tri this fall. Public humility does not fit me well so know I have the motivation. (Gee a better longer life was not enough?)

So I got the 10yr old huffy off the ceilieng of the garage and road it a few times. Need to get it tuned up and some road wheels. This thing is a tank.

In December layed out a 3 mile coarse on the road and started to try and walk/jog it took me about 50 min. Had a HR monitor so hooked that up HR was about 130.

Well did that for 3 days but the Knee pain became a permanent thing, so I got out an old exercise bike and stopped the walking till I can take some weight of the knee.

Did not do much over the holidays but eat. Got back on the bike could go 30 - 1 hr dont remember hr.
Then one day I put in 1hr of hard work was feeling good but noticed an odd odor. Then a funny noise and it got hard to pedal then stopped. A few days latter I took it apart the tensioner pully had failed inside then melted. It was welded on and really not servicable so in the trash it went.

Brought up the old norditack. GOD I HATE THAT THING. It is alot more work. Well that kind of brings the workouts up to date. Done 2 days on the Norditrack 30 min one day and a am and pm 30 min work out the day before.

Trying also to keep a training log and a food consumption log.

I also have a tendency to spend money on toys then lose interest so I have already been looking at bikes/trainers/cloths ect... but think I will try another motivator which is I am only going to get the bare minimum to do this. So I will just put new wheels on the bike and tune it up. May get a suit to race in cause it sounds like that can really help in the swim. Will rust ride in my running shoes.

Well feel free to ask any questions or offer any advice.

Oh ya, my wife has been using the norditrack also and I asked her what setting shes been on she say's 3 and by the end of my work out Im sweating a little but not much. I use about 2 and am sweating profusely by the end. Man am I out of shape.

Ok, typing this has motivated me to hop on for a good 30 min oh lets try for an hr work out .

See ya all

UPdate did 35 min + 5 cool down. had a good 15 min with HR up at 155. Still amazed how much better I feel after the work out then before. If I could only jump in 5 min into it.

Dont know Tibbs history or why he uses that name but Movie/TV show qoutes stick in my brain for some reason and one that pops up alot and I always thought was a great line is "They call me MR Tibbs" Sidney Poitier in the movie "In the Heat of the Night"

"They call me MR Tibbs" Sidney Poitier

That is exactly where I got the name. I used to be customerjon but I wanted to change things so I chose Mr. Tibbs because Mr. Tibbs is one the badest bad asses ever. When he slapped that white plantation owner, balls baby huge gigantic balls. Love that.

Good on you, you can do it, and don't be too fazed by all those young bucks on here that seem to think a sprint tri is a walk in the park. Most of the people here talk better than they walk, and if they ran like they spelled they would look like 3-legged dogs. You are in fact a very brave man to declare your intentions in front of Tibbs et al. If you want a slightly less intimidating and slightly more sane forum for the beginner you can try Tri Newbies Online, http://www.trinewbies.com/...m2/category-view.asp . A number of people here are very promiscuous in terms of the number of forums (fora?) they inhabit, usually under a wide variety of assumed names.

Now get out there and get moving.

Oh no, I don't say much at all these days, I say one little thing, and now I have offended Tibbs. I am ruined, ruined. Back to TNO for me. I can't hack it here. Before I go, though, what on earth is a carer of pro cycling? Its doing my head in: does it mean you care about it, or don't care about it, or you had a career in it, or you won't have a career in it, or you career all over the rode when you try it, or you want a Porsche Carrera? None of it makes sense.

Congrats and good luck! I have just embarked on a similar venture myself after too many years of couchpotatodom. I've pulled out the old rusty MTB myself and I'm looking for some road tires as we speak. Figure I'm gonna have to earn that new road bike before I buy one (truth is I can't afford one!). I look forward to seeing your progress.

So true... besides "jhc", I also post here as "vitus979". I also use "trichick13" on trinewbies.com and "LordImperius" on leatherdomination.com.

Hmmm, couldn't find leatherdomination.com. A number of interesting sites came up, but most needed a command of german. Is "Gays4rent" some kind of double entredre?

A woman goes into a cocktail bay and says to the bartender "I'd like a double entredre please". And so he gives her one.

I find the motivation from actually having entered an event. I find even more motivation from having done an event and swearing to myself I will never let myself be so unprepared again. On a day to day basis, the decision to stay in bed versus going and doing some exercise is a pretty easy one in favour of staying in bed. Most people's motivation will wane after a few days, weeks, or months unless they have some specific goal in mind. So go on, have you entered anything yet?

Yes and No. I have told LOTS of people Im doing this and I pretty much do what I say I am going to do. I have contacted the orginizers of the local event. It is Aug 28th. But registration is not untill March so I have not registered. and it seems at 5:00 in the morning that Aug 28th is a long ways off. Of course Im a long ways from being able to finish that race. So far I have been pretty good about working out in the afternoon would just like to do 2 a days or just the morning just cant get it going.

Probably just a Fat man making excuses. Ok gotta go work out now.

Hey Dave,

As Nike says, you "JUST DO IT". Drag your butt out of bed and go (well, I have coffee first.) But do it EVERY DAY for 21 days and it will become a habit. I get up at 5AM every day and am out the door after coffee and email check. Once you get into the routine, it becomes much easier. And a bonus is that working out in the AM will bump your metabolism and help out during the day.Plus, if your day goes crazy and you run out of time, you've already done your workout. All good for weight loss. As the pounds come off and people start noticing and commenting and the running gets easier and you get faster, the motivation seems to take care of itself.

Works even better if you eat something light like a banana or "runny" porridge whilst doing the e mail check as the body starts the metabolism and assists in recovery better than an unfuelled run. Not my view Nancy Clark's.

Nope. Personally does NOT work for me. I get a huge energy drop about 20 minutes into a run if I eat anything prior. Light headed almost passing out. I've tried numerous combinations and timing and same result. Coffee only for me.

Nice piece. It's always good to hear these stories about life changing events and this could be huge for you if you stick with it.

Stay on board and read and learn. Before long an Oly will seem like a warmup and you'll be hankerin' for the big cheese-Ironman. :)
