Alcatraz: Tri or road bike?
Question for all the Alcatraz vets. Tri (steep) or road bike for the race? I've been riding the tips for this bike leg and seems to be technical and hilly. Would a road bike geometry suit this or a steep tri bike? Will I be spending much time in the aero position? My first Alcatraz and I'm pumped!

I believe someone said in an earlier post--something like the Cervelo Soloist would be great on this course. Lots of hills and turns, but there are a couple of places where aerobars would be nice (out of transition along the waterfront, in the park). A road bike with aerobars would be my choice.

I'd be more concerned how good your wetsuit is.....the bay has been FREEZING!

I posted a similar question earlier and the response I got (for which I'm grateful) suggested that a road bike with shorty tri bars was the way to go. I've got a Principia T28 which has a 76 deg seat angle but I'm doing the drops and clip on routine. I haven't done the course so can't claim any expertise. Can SF Bay be colder than the North Sea in May??!

and I would say it was in the upper 50s. It took longer than usual to get warmed up. Face and hands were pretty painful at first. Also forgot to wear earplugs which I regretted.

Probably won't be an issue race day given the pumping adrenaline when you take the plunge.
