Rolling Stone Magazine Top 500 songs
Is there a list online anywhere yet?

I dare say we could have some debate about the ranking of the songs included and those not on the list.

THE TOP TEN 1. "Like a Rolling Stone," Bob Dylan
2. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Rolling Stones
3. "Imagine," John Lennon
4. "What's Going On," Marvin Gaye
5. "Respect," Aretha Franklin
6. "Good Vibrations," Beach Boys
7. "Johnny B. Goode," Chuck Berry
8. "Hey Jude," Beatles
9. "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana
10. "What'd I Say," Ray Charles

I don't think I'd have Imagine on that list, but otherwise pretty solid

great topic - doesn't anyone have the full list? I don't know what they mean by "top," but my top 10 would probably look pretty different (not that those aren't good songs)

Anyone suprised that "Like a Rolling Stone" was #1 on the Rolling Stone list?

I wanna know where classics like Detroit Rock City and I Want You to Want Me ended up.

Both Nirvana and Beach Boys defined a genre - I'm guessing that's why they're on there

Good point -

Of course these lists are always highly arbitrary.

Nirvana defined and killed a genre if that's what you mean.

How is it possible that there are only 2 songs in the top 20 recorded in the last 33 years? I love early rock as much as almost anyone, but you can't just blow off 3 decades like that. Based on that, I'm not even bothering to read the rest of the list. I can tell it will have little to do with a list I might make.

What is bothersome about the "lists" is that it's more a popularity contest than it is actually about content. I don't think any one of those songs in the top ten was actually the respective artists most profound work, and that's a shame. Listen to damn near any radio station and it's a typical top 500 or top 1000 list as well, leaving out much of the artists most passionate pieces. Anyway, they didn't call Clapton God only to have him be left out of the top-ten. Bogus list. I'd like to see a list covering ALL of music, not just rock. Let's see them put Jimmy's Little Wing next to Mozart's Turkish Rondo, then it'd be a list worth buying.

I'm betting this was by reader participation, a popularity contest. I didn't vote, and neither did a lot of folks I know, 'cuz we're too damned old to read Rolling Stone anymore.

The list is BS...

Nevermind the top ten, the fact that Zepplin isn't even in the top 20 is a travesty. How can you not put Zepplin in? The Beach Boys over LZ? No way. And ACDC being way down on the list is another one that I can't figure out. The Beatles have 4 songs in the top 20. Now, The Beatles were definitely one of the most influential, but do they really deserve 4 spots?

Again, as stated, these lists are way too subjective that they become meaningless.

"I wanna know where classics like Detroit Rock City and I Want You to Want Me ended up."

Classics? These aren't CLASSICS!! Classics would be something from the '50s or 60s, something that defined an evolutionary phase...

TRUE CLASSICS
Rock Around the Clock (Bill Haley and the Comets)
Louie Louie (The Kingsmen - You couldn't BE in a band in the '60s if you didn't play this one)
Shout (Isleys)
Hit the Road Jack (Ray Charles)
Unchained Melody (Righteous Bros)
I Got You (James Brown, the hardest workin' man in Show Bidness)
Roll Over Beethoven (Chuck Berry)
Blue Suede Shoes (Elvis/Carl Perkins)
Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On (Jerry Lee Lewis)
Wonderful World (Sam Cooke)
Wake Up Little Susie (The Everlys)
Gloria (Them - Introducing Van Morrison)
Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf - DEFINED Heavy Metal, even coined the phrase)
Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley)
House of the Rising Sun (Animals)
Respect (Otis/Aretha)

JES PLAIN GREAT
Crossroads (Cream)
Foxy Lady (Jimi)
Gimme Some Lovin (Spencer Davis - introducing Steve Winwood)
Hotel CA (Dylan/Eagles)
The Boys Are Back In Town (Thin Lizzy)
We Will Rock You (Queen)
Dance to the Music (Sly Stone)
It's Your Thing (Isleys)
All Along the Watchtower (Jimi/Dylan)
More Than A Feeling (Boston)
I Love Rock 'n' Roll (Joan Jett)
Summer in the City (Spoonful)
Light My Fire (Doors)

MISC
I Wanna Hold Your Hand (introduced the Beatles, but it was a crappy song)
Stairway to Heaven (more crap, but the Zeppelin's signature song)
Mr Tambourine Man (Byrds/Dylan)
Jailhouse Rock (Elvis - more crap, etc)

Sure, and you probably wouldn't appreciate a '57 Nomad either, let alone a '41 Willys. Some day your children will laugh at your music, then you'll be sorry!

I think I need to dig up those classics and make a new CD for Spin! I also think I need to start shopping for a walker...

I'm with you on 1, 2, 3, 6 & 7. And I gotta admit that even though it was a dumb song, Go go was a real toe tapper.

I think Dr Hook's Cover of the Rolling Stone should have made #1 instead of Dylan

The Nomad? That's a station wagon ;) Give me a '67 Shelby GT 350 any day of the week, or even a '68. Hell, I saw a 1969 Chevy Malibu Convertable for sale on one of my rides and was very, very tempted. The '41 Willy's Overland? Couldn't you buy those from army surplus stores? I recall a guy in our community ordered one of those through the mail and it came packed in drums full of grease. He built it up and now drives it in the local parades.

Now, back to the music...
