Degrees of Abomination

I hope I'm not in breach of the new forum rules. Below is an email JOKE that I received and it gave me a good chuckle. Naturally I thought of Slowtwitch. While I do think there is a good underlying point to it (religions often appear to pick and choose the teachings they wish to follow or shout from the mountaintop), my intent is to post it as a JOKE.

So please recognize that this is a JOKE. I'm not trying to offend anyone. If you're the sort of person who doesn't have thick enough skin to tolerate a JOKE about Bush or Christianity, then please do me and yourself a favor and refrain from reading this JOKE.

FWIW I have an Uncle who's a priest and I think he would find this hysterrical.

Dear President Bush,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from you and understand why you would propose and support a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. As you said, "in the eyes of God marriage is based between a man and a woman." I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify?
Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states that he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Yours in Christ,

How do you say it when he finally smites them? Are they smoted? Smitten? Smotten? I can never figure that one out :-)

Seriously, you're gonna have to go after the folks with something from the New Testament. Evangelicals belive the new one is the real, true word of God, and that Jesus came to fulfill the prophecy. I think the Old one is something like a guideline, now. Especially when you look at the various Bibles that have the words of Jesus in red, as opposed to the normal color black. That's the "roadmap" to behavior, now.

But I understand the Jews would give you a lot of crap and be able to cite the Old Testament as a basis for being able to do it :-)

If this weren't a joke thread, I might ask why certain Christians are so focused on gays when Jesus never spoke of the matter....

But perhaps I've said enough on the subject for one day (week? month?). I definitely don't want to get smoted on. I'll go persuse the Hottie thread once more and call it a night ;)

I wish someone would post a fair price for the slave daughter.

I like the commandments. The one about worshipping false gods , My Road bike & Ipod regularly get a bow, with a "your the word and the light".

I get out of the coveting my neighbors wife, as he is my buddy that lives 20 miles away, His wife is 5' 7" and catches me at the door, with an ass grabbing hug, so I am still legal on that one.

As far as the pig skin, I just eat ribs or pork chops,

IMO, I think it's just the discussion of the week. I don't feel many Christians are going through their normal "non-discussion board" lives focusing on or even really concerned with gay marriage. There are a lot other more pressing issues in each person's day .... they just don't make for as interesting discussion.

Jesus didn't speak on a lot of political matters. Jesus/ God doesn't seem all that concerned with many things that men worry about. Jesus never sought to make or break ANY law. However, people lived under the rulership of a King. King Herod and Pontious Pilate in Jesus's living years. So, there was no involvement of the people. We, as Americans, are not only invited to partake in the decisions ... but depended on.

Jesus always seemed to me to have the atittude of "legality does not determine right and wrong" .... Jesus also seemed more focused on a more important task that determining if gay people could get married or just live together their whole life.

Hopefully, I am not starting a huge thread ... but I did want to point out that this is a big issue amongst Christians. Some feel they are doing as God wishes or what God would want, others seem to feel as though dwelling on political matters is losing focus of the main task.

All in all, I feel that many people are intending to "do the right thing" ... people just disagree what the right thing is. Regardless, I have really enjoyed the adult conversation and hearing/sharing viewpoints.
