Need help identifying quote
I've come across a quote in two seperate books recently- both authors took for granted that I'm familiar with it, and both were wrong.

"A common soldier, a child, a girl at the door of an inn have changed the face of the future and almost of Nature."

Can someone help me put that in context, please?

Aren't they talking about the birth and death of Jesus?

Interesting quote too.

Actually I hadn't thought of that. I guess everything makes sense that way, except maybe the common soldier- who's that?

Edmund Burke, First Letter on a Regicide Peace.

The "common soldier" to whom Burke refers is Arnold of Winkelreid, who flung himself upon the Austrian spears to save his country; the child is the young Hannibal, told by his father to wage ruthless war upon Rome; the girl at the door of an inn is Joan of Arc.

I bow to Klehner's knowledge, however, the soldier in my scenario could be the soldier who pierced Jesus's side while on the cross. Or the soldier who first arrested him.

(using best Maxwell Smart impression)

Would you believe that I had that reference off the top of my head?

You must certainly had the reference in your head, but why remember when you can search? You could have gotten the same result by googling the quote and checking the first link: http://www.townhall.com/...me/KIRK/kirk404.html, then reading the 8 th and 9 th paragraphs ;)

The next question is what books were you reading?

Sheesh, are all of you too young to be intimately familiar with the TV program "Get Smart"?

(paraphrasing from memory)

Maxwell Smart: Would you believe that, right now, the Second Fleet is surrounding this ship?"

Evil Nemesis: No.

Smart: Would you believe the Third Fleet?

Evil Nemesis: I don't think so.

Smart: How about two boys scouts in a rowboat?

(Evil Nemesis takes Smart away)

Almost every episode had a variation on this scene.

While I am not familiar with the show, I did catch your "(using best Maxwell Smart impression)" reference for what it was. I was just doing my best Smart Ass impression!

The next question is what books were you reading?

"Redeeming the Time" by Russell Kirk

"The Historic Reality of Christian Culture" by Christopher Dawson
