women's track cycling

So I participated in a Women's track cycling clinic last weekend. and was wondering how many of you race on the track. It was my first time riding a fixed gear bike without brakes but it was so much fun.

Note my screen name.........

Which track?

The velodrome is the most fun I've ever had on a bike.

The Kissena track in Queens (NYC). I brought my pedals and I rode one of their loaner bikes. They have a weekly race series that I want to try, but I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. Are there any good web sites to explain rules etc. Thanks for your help.

Do they have an intro class? Our velodrome has a four week course designed to teach you the basics of riding at the track, and some race strategies. It's strongly encouraged that you take the class before racing. (This is separate from the "women's night", which we also have)

I'm not racing this season, for a number of reasons, but have for the last few years. It really is a blast, and track folks are happy to help you learn. It CAN be dangerous, if you don't know what you're doing, so if you can get to a class that would be best...you can learn stuff by watching, as far as the different types of races, etc....but really, the best way to learn how to ride in a race is to ride. If you have any road racing experience, that helps, too. IMO, the hardest thing is not learning how to handle the bike and the track, but how to deal with riding that closely with other people.

Most tracks (I thought all) require you to go through a beginners class before you are allowed to race on the track. Besides getting comfortable on the track and riding a fixie you need to learn the rules of training and racing on the track. I'm not doing any track racing this season while I focus on ironman training but I love track racing! The races are really fun and great workouts!!! If I were you I would contact the track (or maybe check their web site) and ask if they have any upcoming beginners training classes or clinics. Yours must be a bigger track... OUrs is a wooden, 250 m. Steep and slick :-) When it's wet, you don't ride. (I was just looking at some of the pics on the Kissena web site).

I totally agree with everyone else on beginners/learn to ride sessions. We require people to do a minimum of 3 sessions before they can even think about racing. There are so many rules on the track, put in place for safety reasons, that you really just shouldn't jump on a bike and on the track. There are also some other little nuances different from road racing.

Thanks for all the information. The track holds training sessions twice a week - I'm planning to get there when I can to learn more. I went to a three hour women's clinic where they taught us a lot - now I just have to practice and get used to the different bike. I've done a few crits, so I don't mind riding close to others. The track is really trying to bring in more women so they can split the race field into two groups for racing so they are very encouraging.

The main thing is confidence on the track, and that comes from practising and getting used to how it all works. Our local track runs a friday night beginners session where you learn getting to the rail, stopping, standing starts, flying laps, and all those useful things before getting to race.

Always remember to look over your shoulder in the direction you intend to move before going up or down the track.

Clm and several other forum members race regularly, and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

I've never done a 3K. Might have to do elite quals just to get a time.

Sprinting is going ok but I wasn't paying attention last night in a 3-up and got taken. We have another sprint tournament on Sunday so that should be good fun (and good practice).

Good luck in the kilo and 500! The kilo looks like it is just brutal. All out sprint but too long to be really full out.

I too am pretty new to riding the track. I got hooked up with a ladies program a few months back and did my first Omnium last weekend. I'm pretty lucky to live close to two tracks including the nice indoor wooden track :-) and now I hardly want to ride anywhere but there.

If anyone is coming to Masters States come say hi, I'll be volunteering there most of the weekend.

Some of my teammates were just down in Encino for the omnium. They had a good time there!

Our masters states are in July. I need to get down to ADT and do the "learn to ride on the steep track" session they have.

I saw some of those kids from San Jose! They were fast. I volunteered at a training race at ADT on Friday and raced Encino on Sat, saw them at both races. I forgot that Nor Cal has it's own states. Junior Nats is at ADT. Do come down and ride it, it's so totally awesome. I started at Encino but I dig ADT now that I've been going there a lot. I'm gettin spoiled.
