Closest to Physical Violence in Years
I always have and always will love dogs, but am sick to death of irresponsible dog owners. Last week, took my 9 year old hiking on a popular trail in the NH White Mountains. The rule is that dogs must be on a leash 100% of the time. This is probably followed 50% in practice. That said, most people will hold or leash their dog when they come across others. We were hiking and a 60-75lb. dog was 100 yards plus in front of its owner and approached and started growling at my son. I called harshly to the owners to come and get the animal and was prepared to kick and hit the dog with my walking poles until they caught up with their animal. I realize it wasn't the dogs but the owner's fault. I really wanted to hit/ kick the owner.

Good for you to remain cool. Do you think the dog owners understood the situation or do you think they'll remain oblivious?

Oblivious, everyone thinks "their" dog won't hurt anyone until it does. This dog was barring teeth and growling. Again, I'm a former dog owner who will own a dog after recovering from putting a 14 year old lab down this summer.

I had this exact scenario play out, and it was also in the White Mountains. The dog was about the same size, probably a bit smaller, but it was acting very aggressive towards me and my daughter. The owners were nowhere in sight. I tried to get the dog to back down but it wasn't giving an inch. I had positioned myself between the dog and my daughter and I truly thought it was going to attack. I had my knife out and I was ready to use it if he did. The owners finally heard me yelling at it and came up the trail and leashed it, but it was still pulling at the leash and baring it's teeth. I reminded the owners of their responsibility and let them know that I wouldn't hesitate to have killed their dog if it attacked, and that if their dog did that to someone that was carrying, there's a good chance it would have been dead by the time they got there.

I agree that it's generally the owners and not the dogs that are at fault, although this dog was particularly aggressive. I can't believe this is the first time that the dog had acted aggressively like this and the owners should know better than to let it off leash. Even if it hadn't acted this way before, the dog should be leashed so that it can be controlled. I believe the White Mountain National Forest allows dogs to be off-leash but must be under voice command at all times. This dog clearly wasn't under the owners controls in any way. They acted totally surprised that their little angel acted this way and kept saying "he's never done this before." Well, now that they've seen it for themselves, I hope the act responsibly and keep him leashed, for his own good.

4. said nothing.

we've got 2 dick neighbors who said nothing. one dick's doberman came out aggressively as my wife and i were walking. i grabbed a big rock and was ready to launch it. if that didn't stop it i had planned on offering up my left arm so my right hand cold crush it's windpipe. (all this was in my mind of course, hoping i could execute it properly.) i'm right handed so i also would have needed that hand to sign the legal documents when suing the shit out of the asshole. dog stopped short and was barking, dick neighbor came out and called the animal then turned and walked away saying nothing to us.

other dick has multiple dogs. one chased me on my mtb up the trail one day. he said nothing. same dick, different dog, i'm rolling out of my drive on my road bike and his other dog has it's ears flat, tail down, low, kinda quite growl going on. the dick calls the dog and as i ride by he kinda chuckles. this dude is a real piece of shit. he's probably in his late 60s, early 70s. he's in a house that, i think, was originally his fathers. we're in kind of a rural area and that house is one of the oldest ones up here. and it too is a piece of shit. the old dick doesnt like it that other people over time have moved to this part of the mountain. guess what ya dick, ya should have bought all the land around ya...problem solved. but ya didn't so piss off. i'd really like to break this guys hip.

4. MY dog doesn't bite!

I had an indignant owner proclaim this after his German Shepherd blitzed me and got a full taste of my hip. According to the owner, it clearly didn't happen because he was 40 yards down the trail (not minding his dog) and he didn't see it happen.

BTW, is there some secret voodoo to embedding video here? I always just get a link rather than inline. (Windows/Firefox).

Years ago when I lived in Southie a guy moved next door with his huge Rottweiler. I come home from a run one night and the guy is sitting on the stoop with some friends and the dog came after me, barking and snarling. I freeze and then start to back up quickly as the dog gets close; the guy suddenly whistles and the dog slams on the brakes as he gets within a few feet of me. I'm scared shitless and start yelling at the guy and he says "He won't bother you, you shouldn't have backed up like that!" while his friends laughed. I was pissed.

A few months later its winter and I'm shoveling out the car. Guy comes out with the dog and sure enough it makes a beeline towards me, growling and showing teeth. I stood back and had a good grip on the shovel, getting ready to swing for the fences if need be (full disclosure - I love dogs and don't advocate harming them, but was ready to protect myself). Guy does the same thing and whistles as the dog gets close, laughs and gets in his car and drives off. I would have definitely taken a beating from the guy if anything happened since he was much bigger than me, just hated the fact that on two occasions he let the dog rush me just for the fun of it.

I have a giant male Great Pyrenees, he goes 120+ lbs of pure muscle. Invariably someone will have a little dog off leash on the trail and as he runs up say, 'don't worry, he doesn't bite' I always respond 'mine does'. He doesn't, but I like to see them scramble.

People also need to keep their kids on a leash while we are bitching. Last weekend I was walking both of our Pyrs on a designated pet trail in the metropark. It is 3.5 miles through the woods. As we were finishing up there is a family walking towards us. They had a kid that was probably in the 3 - 4 year old range who sees our big fluffy dogs and comes running towards them. They don't bat an eye until I loudly tell their kid, 'you shouldn't run up to strange dogs, you never know if they'll bite' Finally mom trots forward and grabs the kid's hand. WTF? Whatever happened to telling your kids to not try to pet strange dogs?

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

My kids will run up to strange dogs all the time. I have to constantly tell them not too.

That's one thing my kids do well. They always ask for permission to pet someone's dog, move slowly closer and then wait for the dog to come over. It took a lot of reminding but after we put our dog down all they wanted to do was play with every dog they saw.

Still working on staying away from the random cats and deer in our yard.

And I'm joking about the kid being on a leash thing. If the parents are making any effort whatsoever I'm fine with it. But in this case, and a lot of others, the parents see it and just laugh and smile. They are essentially putting my dog's life at risk. If a strange kid runs up and grabs his face then he will be held responsible for anything that happens. And since the kid's head will easily fit in his mouth, even the gentlest of reminder nips would probably not go over well.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

My youngest (he's 10) will now approach and ask the owner if he can pet the dog. 9 times out of 10 the dog will already have kids around it already when he does. We haven't run into a non-friendly dog yet....thank god. I personally don't think dogs should be allowed at public venues but that's different than what you guys are talking about. My kids interactions have always been at a rec ball game or cross country meet ina public park.

Why, do you wanna go?

Depends, is it like riding a bike? Went through my share in adolescence. Last punch I threw, after kicking down a door in college to get a guy off a female friend/ potential rape situation, put him in the hospital. If the dude was a trained fighter, things could have gone downhill, but I'm somewhat jacked from months of doing crossfit (long story) and was pretty ramped on adrenaline from seeing my son scared and being scared from him.

So the answer is “no.”

Quote:

And?

I eat jacked crossfit guys for lunch lunch on a weekly basis. That’s not a brag. That’s just fact.

It’s a really good idea for you to not get into a physical confrontation.

I had to remove a guy from a job site Monday Tweaker was bothering people, me included. I asked him to leave and he started to verbally threaten me. I knew he had no training by the way he had his hands down.

I’m amazed that untrained people get into scraps. It’s not smart.

<<It’s a really good idea for you to not get into a physical confrontation.>>

And he didn't. He said he wanted to, but didn't.

<<I’m amazed that untrained people get into scraps. It’s not smart.>>

It's also not smart to put people in situations where you or your pets are perceived as threatening other people's kids. Trained or not, wise or not, most parents are going to feel a very strong urge to do everything they can to protect their kids even if it means risking their own safety. Harry seems to have managed the situation well - he felt the anger welling up inside him but since the threat didn't mature into something that actually was doing harm to his kid, he didn't get into a fight.

6AM on a Sunday morning a few summers ago. 1/2 mile from the house a very large mutt runs straight for me while I am running. It runs out of a yard with a very obese woman sitting on the front porch of the trailer. I assume it must be a stray roaming the neighborhood since she is making no effort to stop the dog. I took refuge behind a mailbox and light pole. Trying to keep from getting bitten. When I realized it was no use the dog was going to get me I got my dog mace out and started to shake it up before I sprayed the dog. Once this fat bitch saw me getting ready to mace the dog she starts hollering for the dog and does her best attempt at running down the driveway to get the dog. I was so pissed but also still scared of the dog so I didn't go off on the woman like I wanted.

I guess she was going to sit there and watch me get bitten by the dog? This stopped me from running in the area.
