Homes can be rebuilt in a few months. What about the 100+ year old grape vines? That's a travesty.

Better stock up, now, on your old vine zinfandels.

Edit: I was a dick for writing this. Before attacking me see my post below.

Friends live in Petaluma. Yesterday they woke up to ash covering their lawn, house, and car like it was snow. She's two months away from giving birth to their second. Hopefully, this doesn't get worse.

I built a house in the hills east of Santa Rosa in the 90's - so far, it looks like it's still there. Crazy how spread out and spotty the fire is. Still have friends there but all of them as of yesterday were outside of the evacuation zone although one of them, only by a block.

Yea. Upon re-reading my reply I am a dick. My bad.

We visited the area a few years ago and know it pretty well. Great little towns all along the Napa and Sonoma highways. Good hard-working people there.

THank you for that. A good friend and his wife were evacuated to a Safeway last night as their house burned down. They lost most everything and the fires are still not contained yet.

For most wildfires in CA there seems to be an effort by fire fighters to double down when the fire gets near dwellings or buildings. This one is so out of control that whole subdivisions have been leveled. It's real bad. The wind is calmer today, maybe that will help. We have friends that had to evacuate including horses, kids, chickens and dogs.

I hope the fires level out today. Keeping everyone who lives up that way in my thoughts. I am in southern California, but I have many friends up that way who could potentially be in danger. Hopefully the valiant fire fighters help keep it contained and everyone is able to safely evacuate. It will be extremely tough for many of them to rebuild, but if they're alive its a blessing that they will be able to continue on and start again.

This month of course is the anniversary of the big Oakland Hills fire---and I think October tends to be deemed the worst of the fire months, everything is dried out and for some reason we get the big winds as well and there you go.

Know a few people in the area currently affected and have stayed at a few of the places that burned down. The pre-race meeting and other festivities for the Vineman Half were held at the Hilton at least one time I raced there...remember meeting Madonna Buder at said meeting. Stayed at the Fountaingrove Inn which is now gone.

It's bad, really bad.

Are the majority of these from lightening?
Due to the randomness the only other explanation would be a mad, crazy-ass arsonist who’s just driving around throwing matches out the window.

Too much overgrowth from a super wet winter and a very dry summer. We were up in Guerneville in August and it was bone dry with lots and lots of dried up vegetation.

Zero lightning. Theory now is that the winds blew down power lines or blew trees into power lines, at least for some of them

Yeah, let's just blame 'Nature"

And everybody is just happy to be at a shelter (unless they are at my house).

Common people get screwed because of poor infrastructure and lack of governance.

I live in Santa rosa and had to evacuate today. Fate of my house depends on what the winds do over the next few days. It's bad. Very very bad. Lots of friends have lost everything they owned. For those who know mountain biking in the area Annadel park looks to be half gone at this point.

Not saying that it is all nature's fault. Clearly a bunch of stuff got built without adding appropriate firefighting capacity. But the nature is not very forgiving.....

I've stayed at the Hilton in Santa Rosa that burned to the freakin' ground, and got engaged at Chateau St. Jean which apparently also saw a ton of damage. We've vacationed in Sonoma County maybe a dozen times - love the place.

Hope you all are safe out there.

One of the vineyards we were going to go to burned. We couldn't see Alcatraz or the Golden Gate bridge yesterday because the smoke was so bad.
