What message are my neighbors trying to broadcast?
I had some new neighbors move in down the street about 6 months ago. I haven't seen them outside yet, so I don't know what they look like to add any additional context to the below.

One car is sporting a black state vanity license plate that reads "SATAN".

In the front yard, flying proudly at all times atop a proper and duly stout 25-foot flag pole is the Blackbeard banner.

I assume their intent is to loudly broadcast something about themselves that they want others to know. What's your guess?

I don't have any issues with any of the above, just curious.

Can't say for sure but with Halloween approaching I know which house would be at the top of the list to trick or treat at !

The message?

“Hey, look at me!”

They’re attention whores.

I’m guessing lots of piercings, tattoos and hair dye.

Damn, I would have gone down there with a bottle of tequila and introduced myself a long time ago. At the worst they are going to be interesting....

Uh, you've only left out the most important detail... Is the Lady of the house hot? Everything else can be excused/overlooked (or even celebrated) depending...

While pretending to say they want to be left alone.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Which is what? I'd rather not Google it and then have that marker on my NSA/Russian/CIA/Antifa search record.

If we are going to really consider a message then my guess is: time is running out so surrender to the devil or else.

the vanity plate is self explanatory
The flag - the hour glass means time is running out, the spear pointing at the heart means violence. The color black means quarter may be given. A red flag would mean things are not going to end well. I forget what the actual skeleton means.

Why not ask them?
Very likely they are your standard run of the mill Satanists.

And then have some fun with that. Tell them you are a member of the splinter denomination known as the "Unreformed Brethren of Beelzebub". Your religious dogmas radically and fundamentally differ from their Satanist ones, kind of the the same way the Irish Catholic views differ from the English Anglican ones. Then, in a dark and ominous tone, say "I hope we don't have any TROUBLES in the neighborhood" and just walk away.

Remember - It's important to be comfortable in your own skin... because it turns out society frowns on wearing other people's

I would ask them for sure, if I ever happen to meet them. I'm not going to go knock on their door though. The neighborhood is in the middle of suburbia, run of the mill USA mc-houses and people.

I assume with a SATAN license plate the driver is welcoming confrontation and scorn from a certain slice of life and assume all of it is just a dumb way of saying "look at me".

They’re attention whores.

Would you say the same thing if they had a license plate that read "Jesus", a Jesus fish sticker on the car, and crucifix hung on their door. Frankly, I would be more inclined to visit the devil worshippers than getting anywhere near the Jesus people.

No, because devil worship is consciously and explicitly “counter culture”.

I don’t mind being counter culture (I am, in a lot of ways), I just see advertising such things in the form of bumper stickers as attention seeking.

Same can be said for the Jesus shit too but it’s a much lower level of attention seeking.

Either way, it’s just not my thing.
