Need new racing tubulars
Looking for new racing tubulars. Getting confused with all the info on the web.

Bike is a P5, wheel: Hed Stinger9 Flamme Rouge.

I weight 165 pounds (if that matters).

Raced Tufo's Hi-composite carbon 22mm last season.

Should I go wider, lighter ?

Suggestions ? Teach me !! Best bang for the buck ?

Cheers !

Friends don't let friends ride tufos . The old ones used to cost almost 20 watts. I think they may have improved a little since then.

My latest book: "Out of the Melting Pot, Into the Fire" is on sale on Amazon and at other online and local booksellers

Road racing on the new Vittoria Corsa G+ tubulars on stinger's and could not be more pleased. Conti seem to have quality control issues that cause mounting issues, veloflex seems to have tested poorly in some rr tests (though i like their construction and feel), and Tufo are just slow. If you are worried about flats i would add a few cc's of stans and trust the tire.

I've been using the Vitoria Corsa Speeds on my Stingers. They fit get spin great. Add a little orange seal, glue the shit out of them and they will make you happy. Everyone will say the bullshit about riding pristine roads and all that crap, you have great race hoops, wrap them accordingly. Stay away from Contis, no latex in them, only pro models.

I use the zipp tangent 23 mm on my race wheels. latex tubes and seem to roll fast! I've got about 150 race miles on the set I am using now and they still look new.

I have just put on 23mm Michelin Pro 4's which have a latex tube (they also do 25mm).

They seem nicely made / high quality.

No idea on rolling resistance - I would be interested to hear if anyone uncovers any results on this aspect :-)

I have a brand new pair of Conti Attack/Force tubulars that I won at a race - I only have clinchers, so not doing me much good. Let me know if interested.

bicycleroolingresistance.com has tested a bunch of the new Micehlins. They only test with butyl tubes, but you can see how they stack up against all the other players.

Thank you :-)

I didn't wonder if that could be used as a comparison though i.e. Is it fair to assume just because a tyre in clincher is 'good' its tubular counterpart is also 'good' considering its difference in construction etc. Contis tyres even have a different tread pattern for the same model name ... !

It depends... ;-)) If a company uses the same construction techniques for clinchers and tubulars, then maybe it's ok. If they don't, then I wouldn't count on it. I could be wrong, but I believe only Vittoria glues the tread to the carcass for both tubulars and clinchers.

Thank you :-)

In the case of michelins then it's pretty useless to try and draw a comparison.

My tubulars are glued - looking at the same tyre model in clincher (admittedly only on internet pictures), construction is definitely different.

ps : that should have said 'did' in my post above and not 'didnt' :-)

What about width for flame rouge or zip fc? 23 or 25?

The S-Works Turbo tubular (24mm) is good, and works well with wider rims.
I'm sure the aerodynamics of the Veloflex Carbon (23mm) aren't anywhere near as good as the Turbo, but they're a great tire and I run those on my climbing wheels (Corima MCC Aero+ - wide rim, but not quite as wide at the 404).

Either of those would probably be a better choice than the Tufo. For TTing on the HEDs I'd probably go for the Turbo.

ETA: Conti make decent tubulars for training, if you're into training on tubs, but I wouldn't race on them. Clinchers are a different story.

Almost any tire is faster than a Tufo.

Tufos do make good spares though, because they roll-up pretty small.
