College wrestling: 2017 NCAA Championships
Quote | Reply
Remarkably, all ten #1 seeds are undefeated. Nobody seems to know if that has ever happened before.

Nobody else in the tournament is undefeated. 174 has three others with only one loss (Epperly, BoJo by one point to #2 Realbuto, Realbuto by one point to the #1 Valencia). 184 came close to having two undefeateds, but Martin beat then-undefeated Nickal in the B1G championships last week. 285 had undefeateds until again at B1G #1 Synder beat then-undefeated Medbery in the final.

Gabe Dean at 184 is 31-0, and has given up exactly two points that weren't escape points (a last second takedown by Martin when Dean was going for a risky move to try for a major decision); that's why he's been nicknamed "Destroyer of Worlds". That and he led the country with 20 pins. Snyder at 285 also has given up only one takedown (AFAIK), but he's only 12-0.

I'm betting Nick Suriano beats Thomas Gilman at 125.

Suriano was on crutches days ago. Pulled the "walk on the mat, injury default at :01" at B1G so that he'd be eligible for NCAAs. Apparently, limped off the mat Major sprained ankle a couple of weeks ago. He might not get past the Lizard if he isn't fully healed.

A lot of people would like to see Gilman lose.

Suriano will be lucky to be able to walk into the arena. He looked terrible just getting to weigh ins last weekend.

IF he wrestles, his path to the finals is hard. Lizak/Terao in the quarters (both are crazy dangerous), Joey Dance in the semis will exploit any weakness.

I would be surprised if we get to see Gilman v Suriano. But, if we do, great. I like our odds.

133 is crazy -- 1,2,3,4,7,8 are all champ material.

Should be good fun. Kind of hard to believe you can be hurt and go 2 and out at your conference tournament and still get a 3 seed.

Would be pretty sweet to see McKee pull out a few upsets and have an All Minnesota semifinal with him and Gross and 133.

The guys you highlighted do seem almost untouchable at this point, but crazy happens this time of year.

Heil may be the most uninspiring and boring undefeated wrestler in the tourney, so that won't be a disappointment.

Do you watch it through NCAA.com? or is there a better site?

ESPN will be streaming all matches on all mats for the first five sessions (through semifinals), on ESPNU (I think this is TV, but it isn't one of the mat cameras) and ESPN3. ESPN will broadcast the finals Saturday night.

Yeah, that's a shame for him and a big blow to Penn State's chances for the team title.

It also sucks for the guy who likely would have been in had Suriano been pulled before the deadline (that
person would probably have been Baughman from Cornell). Not to mention the fact that they can't reseed, so
the #4 will still have to wrestle the #1, instead of the #2 (who the #4 beat this year).

Cael Sanderson said, just a few days ago, that Suriano was in, and wrestling at that very moment. Then he decides that, no, after almost four weeks since the injury, that Suriano is not in. So Buffalo takes an early three point lead in the team standings.

Also just announced that Michigan's 149er, Zach Hall, is not in. No reason given.

I didn't even think about the cluster that causes with bracketing. Yeah that blows for the last man out.

Bored at work this morning so I did a little research. The 133# bracket contains 11 MN State Championships between Gross, Mckee, and Sykora.

And the 174 bracket contains 6 MN State Champions between Mark Hall and... Mark Hall.

That does suck for your guy from Cornell, Ken. I would like to think that Sanderson really thought Suriano might be able to go. I can't imagine that he was trying to screw anyone intentionally.

I would have liked to watch Suriano and Gillman again, if that would have happened.

I picked Suriano to beat Gilman earlier in the threat. I knew he had an injury but after the injury Sanderson kind of shrugged it off as not being serious. There are other really good wrestlers there but I think Suriano was the biggest threat to Gilman. Now I don't see anyone beating him. Gilman had a wild match with Ethan Lizak of Minnesota, pinning him after trailing 0-8 but if they meet, Gilman's going to be ready for him.

I would pay good money to see a Lizak Gillman match.

I was joking about the Gophers doing anything in the team competition this year, but I just watched Brett Pfarr's opening match and he worked his ass off to get the major late in the 3rd. I still don't think they have the team to do anything major this year, but that effort is inspiring.

In case you didn't see it. This was the match where Gilman was trailing 8-0.

Day 1 in the books. Penn state already looks to be running away with it, but there are 4 teams within touching distance.

Tommy Thorn(14) upsetting Mckenna(3) at 41 or Theobold (15) upsetting Collica (2) at 49 are the two big upsets of the day.

I'm surprised Penn State is in this position without Suriano wrestling. Their guys came through with lots of bonus points and no one got upset. Martin losing for OSU will hurt the Buckeyes. He beat Hall in the Big 10 tourney.

Some moving and shaking already this morning. Iowa off to a tremendous start on the day.

10 seed from Wyoming upsets the 2 seed to get in to the semis. Damn I wish I didn't have to work today.

It looks like the top seeds got through but there is no stopping Penn State, barring some major upsets. Iowa and OSU have to be happy with their performance but they just don't have the firepower to stop Penn.
