I've had one for a few years; I've only used it in active recovery mode. It's worked very well - I find it really helps my legs feel better between workouts on the same day.

The active recovery program is amazing; sure, it probably does about the same thing as an hour long session of self massage or an hour with a masseuse.... but with the compex, all you have to do is sit there :)

Seriously though, I have had a number of workouts where I probably overextended myself and ended up being in excruciating pain when I got back from a ride or a run.... the active recovery program, no joke, took the pain away and I wasn't even terribly stiff the next day.

While I'm assuming this all leads to "better recovery" and thus "better performance" (I'm no scientist, so I can't quantify it's effects), it sure makes your legs feel pretty darn good, so it's at least worth it from a comfort standpoint.

I have had a Compex for a number of years but like others, had primarily used only the 'Active Recovery' mode and use was infrequent at best and had been considering selling the unit until last week when got out the Compex and opted to give the Endurance program a try on the quads. For the endurance program, the default training time is 50-minutes so with 5-10 minute setup, it helps to have '24' or similar recorded on the DVR as you are not going anywhere while the program is running. With the 'intensity' set to level one, during the program run, I gradually increased the intensity level (or more aptly was able to sustain) a maximum of 50 and wow. While I have done some hard FTP interval efforts and lately have also added Will Black's 'Hour of Power' type sessions to morning Tacx Fortius trainer rides, I have never seen my quads react to those workouts the same way as the Compex endurance program. The session was pretty intense and when it was complete and I got up from the chair, I knew immediately that I would have follow up with the active recovery. As with everything here, YMMV but one final note regarding setup - until you get familiar with the use and setup of the electrode patches and leads, getting ready for the various workouts can take a little bit of time and intermittent use over the course of a year does not help to reduce the learning curve.

MS you were able to run it at a sustained level of 50!!! That's awesome. I'm trying but can't make it up there! I (we, I have to fight my wife for it when we work out on the same day) have had one for just under a year and absolutely love it!!! My marathon running wife uses it for recovery after her tough runs and every now and then I catch her usuing it just because she wants a cheap massage on her legs instead of calling her sports massage dude! I on the other hand....am a recovering Ironman triathlete as I am now working on my Masters degree and have no time to compete. Therefore; I hook it up to my legs while I am writing mindless, endless papers and take a ride on the 'endurance' mode! It is definately keeping me in the game as the times I do get to ride with my tri-geek friends, I don't get completely shelled. It took an age group 3rd in a sprint tri around Christmas time and completely contribute that to the Compex as I certainly wasn't training!

Yes, they are expensive and we had quite the reservations about buying one, however; we are so glad we did! And another thing,,,,the customer service is awesome! If you need anything, they are right there to answer your questions!!! Get one!!!

Attached the Niterider X2 LED lights to the cross/touring bikes and went out for an easy 1-hour recovery ride and when we got back, I sat down in the television chair, setup the Compex, and started another quad workout while we watched television. The program is 55-minutes and having started at 15, I worked up to 50 by the 25-minutes mark when I decided to go higher to 52 then 55. It was at this point - well lets say the wife was thoroughly amused - as everytime the interval started, it felt like someone attached wood working clamps to my quads and was steadily trying to screw the clamps all the way closed. I was layed over because the feeling was so intense that I would hunch over and compress the pillow between my chest and thighs and after 5-7 minutes of that, I noticed I was really starting to sweat and thus wimped out a bit, opting to and reduce the level back to 45!

If you're interested, I've got a very little used Globus Premium Sport that I have been considering selling. Complete with extra pads, and 2 split leads so you can get more muscles activated.

MS, now that was freaking funny! It so reminded me of some of my "manly" moments with the machine and my wife having the same reactions. It becomes a game of "how high can I go without my eyeballs blowing out!"

Doubleplay, if the guy offering the Globus to you is willing to part with it at a decent price, I would buy it!

The endurance workout will make you sweat whereas the recovery mode will make you drool on your pillow it feels so good!

Should be really interesting week when I add the hamstrings back into the mix. Have not done an endurance session on the hamstrings with the Compex in several years but I seem to recall that you lay prone on the floor and evertimie the interval begins, the legs spontaneously curl up like you are exercising on a hamstring machine.

It's available. virtually brand new, extra pads, and split leads to double the amount of work you can do at once.

When I bought my first one, the famous pro I bought it from said he and his pals used to hook up their abs and see who could take the most juice! Tough bastards!

I have used the Compex for abs and like the endurance routine with the quads, it gets pretty intense - nothing liek having the interval fold you in half and not being able to do anything until the rest cycle. While this is important for any area your work, the abs routine can get a bit uncomfortable when the 'gel' on the EMS pads start to get old as I would equate it to a constant feeling of little pin pricks all around the area being trained and thats not a good time.

Full disclosure, I am sponsored by Compex and I was extremely skeptical when I got. I have to say it has made a huge difference in my recovery after difficult training sessions. I've also used it on my knee to help patellar tendonitis and on my feet for Plantar Fascitis. It stimply helps improve the blood flow to help speed recovery. I love mine.

I didn't know what to expect from my Compex, to be honest, but I love it. I admit I use it primarily for active recovery - I feel it relaxes my muscles better than the massage mode. I also do a lot of explosive strength on my abs. It is almost scary at first, watching my ab muscles contracting when I am just sitting at the computer. I figure it is a good way to get some extra muscle work while I am catching up on emails, watching a little TV, etc. If you can afford it, it is worth it.

I'm another who needs to disclose that I'm sponsored by Compex but I love my unit and would definitely budget the money to replace it if taken away. I use the endurance mode throughout the day while working and active recovery in the evenings plus have used the resistance and recovery plus and massage modes. I've had some time/travel issues limiting my training this year and I've found that with regular use of the Compex endurance mode, I've been able to maintain more fitness than I expected. One great thing is that by using the Active Recovery mode every night, I'm never sore to start a workout the next day no matter what I've done the day before.

If you contact me directly, I can help you with a discount on replacement pads. Just don't want to post the code here.

You can also buy gel that extends the life of the pads. One tube will last a long time, because you need only a dab of it each time.
