What's the future of this race? The Chattanooga full is 2 hours away on the same day if it remains on the last Sunday in September. Any chance it's moved to earlier in the year? Or becomes a full? It sells out as is, so it's unlikely they mess with a good event.

I think they will leave it as is. The WTC doesn't like competition too much....unless of course it's their own race. Ironman Louisville and Ironman Canada are generally held on the same day. (I am sure there are more examples I just can't think of any)
As far as the two races being that close to each other I don't see that being a problem. Gives people more options. And quite frankly with the WTC the attitude is "if you hold the race they will come"

Correction, augusta to Chattanooga is more like 3 hours apart.

Probably closer to 4 hours since you have to go through Atlanta...maybe more if traffic is bad.

if this becomes a WTC full, i'm guessing it would sell out in minutes, similar to Chattanooga. the demand in that part of the country is clearly there.
