I bought the Cateye buttons as shown other places in this thread and I plan to add them as Di2 shifters glued to the side of my Magura brakes. Can anyone tell me... Does Shimano (or anybody) sell male connectors that I can splice onto the cateye button's wires so I can plug directly into the Di2 TT wiring set? I've seen a few threads on other sites on how to make your own, but I don't think I have the MacGyver skills to pull it off, I'd rather just buy the right connector. Splicing a connector onto 3 wires, I can do... Making my own connector out of epoxy and duck tape, not so sure... Any thoughts?

Damon,
I ordered the P5 six frame set. Do you know whether aero-spacers for the aduro bar are included and if yes, how many?

Thanks for the response.

I am still considering the P5. I love the bike except for the Di2 issue.

I am also considering getting a new P3 with Di2 which would not have the shifter issue. It is also a lot cheaper.

I can afford the P5 Can you help me out with a question of great importance?

How much faster would a P5 be compared to a P3 in an Ironman (112 miles)? I would run Zipp 808 FCs.

Thanks

one more question: does anybody have the list of the dura-ace Di2 electric cable set (order numbers) which is needed for the P5 frame set?

Hi Johnek,

Yep, the aero stem spacers are included, enough to max out the fork limit. Pretty sure it's about 55mm of spacers or so. In the P5 Arm Pad Stack & Reach table on page 37 (second to last page of the White Paper), the columns of arm pad stack heights are achieved adding stem spacers.

Thank you Damon!
Your help here is really appreciated. It is great to have somebody who can answer any question and is willing to help us. My last question is regarding the Di2 issue. I am going to build my P5 together by my self so I have to order all the dura-ace Di2 components. Most of them are not of the problem, but I am just not sure about the wiring set and would like to avoid buying the wrong one.
Since you guys are assembling the Di2 P5 all the time it would be great if you could give me the shimano number of the appropriate wiring set for the 51er P5. Is there anything else I should think of?

Thank you in advance
Andreas

Attn: Virgin Post...

Damon, I've been lurking on this thread for a few days, and seen quite a few posts regarding P5 size selection. Forgive me if this is a repeat question elsewhere, but all I have seen is in essence "take the Stack and Reach of your old Tri bike and refer to the table" that your company has so well prepared. Unfortunately I don't have a Tri bike. I'm on a 2010 51cm Cervelo S2, which replaced my 1990 two-sizes-too-big all-steel Peugot Raccoon mountain bike that I bought at the Canex in Germany back in my Air Force days, so I'm kinda new to all this. I raced my rookie 2011 season (I did a Half and an Olympic) and sophomore 2012 seasons of triathlon on the road bike, but as an older man, I'm finding long course suits me better, as I did IMMT as my third ever triathlon this year... proud to say in 11:18(!), so I'd like to get a true tri bike to explore my potential a bit more. Naturally the fit on a road vs. tri bike are dissimilar, so how can I go about picking the right combination of size and bar height in the absence of an accurate S&R measurement? I guess what I'm asking is how you'd go about fitting a bike to someone who owns no bike at all, particularly when there is a physical gap in the range of promised sizes to choose from in a physical bike shop?

A couple weeks ago I found a 54cm P5-Three where I bought my S2 in Edmonton (Way Past Fast), and, feeling the naughty thrill of an impending impulse buy, did a cursory mount of it to see if it was anywhere close to my size. It wasn't. With the seat post fully lowered, I couldn't reach the bottom of the pedal stroke without pointing my toes and was reaching like Chris Boardman on the Superman bike. I've been thinking for a good 8 months now that the 51cm was the way to go, but since there are none to be had anywhere, I can't judge for sure. I was really surprised how badly matched I was to a 54cm, so I wouldn't dream of ordering a 51cm without a high degree of due diligence.

FYI, I'm 5' 7", but with stubby little legs and long body (like Fred Flintstone, but in spandex), so I'll be using a 165mm crank on whatever bike I buy. I'm too compressed with long cranks otherwise. 170mm is my physical limit before I start kneeing myself in the rib cage.

Forum Veterans: Be kind.

Thank you.

Regards,
Dave

Find a shop that has a fit bike. From their they should be able to give you your contact points and cordinates and then you can look a the geometry on all the bikes you like and see what you would fit on. Remember though when you are getting fit make sure they know you want a position to race in not a comfortable day at the park position because they will be completely different. I'm honestly not surprised you can't fit on a 54. I'm 6'0 and if I ran a less aggressive position I would pick a 54, with my current position though I need a 51. So I'll be on the p3 it looks like for awhile until they get things figured out.

Ah, I see. Thanks Grant! Now that you mention it, I remember seeing a gizmo in Toronto that a fitter had in the corner resembling what you describe. It looks like a series of square tubes with slider inner tubes, right? Although undoubtedly someone will see this post and correct me, but IFAIK none of the bike shops in Edmonton have one. For a city that touts itself as a triathlon mecca, there isn't a huge selection of triathlon-centric shops. United Cycle is the best of the lot from what I've seen, at least as far as selection goes. Paul H. at United Cycle, who was instrumental in converting the upstairs portion to a triathlon-specific area of the store, is a fun guy to chat with, but for fitting, they only have the bikes that they sell mounted to a turbo-trainer for test fitting. The Cervelo dealer in Edmonton (Tom at Way Past Fast) is a hell of a nice guy, but his fitting process involves a calibrated eyeball approach that I'm sure is not optimal. For a notoriously detail-orientated person, this I find exasperating because there is only one way in my books: the right way. There is one other shop that recently moved called Element that I have yet to visit that might have what you describe. I tried to visit them a few months ago, but ended staring at an empty strip-mall storefront as I didn't know they had moved. They claim to be FIST Certified, FWIW.

My chief concern about any of these shops that sell bikes and do bike fits is they will always try to sell you what they have in stock. I've seen it a hundred times in the past couple of years when I go hang out and look at bike porn. I want to go into a Cervelo dealer, for example, and have him say that I should go up the street and buy a Shiv, because that's the bike for me. But that would never happen.

This leads me to another question. Of the half-dozen or so fit methods, which should I consider the best one to use for pure long-range triathlon TT bike fits? Scott J. in Toronto who did bike fits (and not much else, as far as selling stuff goes) uses the FITT 1ST method, whatever that means compared to other methods.

Thanks again!

Dave

Damon or anyone else - I am new to this forum, but in my research tonight, I came across this site. I see you are able to offer a lot of advice on the new P5. My P5-six came in this week and I was at the bike shop tonight thinking I was finally bringing it home, but a few issues came up. As this is the first P5 that my LBS is building, they were unsure how to solve them.

First - the two side caps that cover the front breaks don't meet in the middle. There is a gap between them that gets even bigger when applying the breaks. It appears you can eliminate the gap by widening the breaks, but then the break pads don't stop the wheel. Have you run into this before? Any suggestions?

Second - the top cap over the front breaks that goes from the stem to the top of the side caps mentioned above is too big. We assume it needs to be cut to fit properly. Before we start cutting, can you confirm?

Lastly - where do most people mount the Di2 battery monitor? It is currently just hanging out the backside of the stem, but that doesn't seem right to us.

I appreciate any help you can provide.

I also don't care for the mismatch of the Satin and gloss. Having said that, is there any reason that an automotive clear gloss sealer/clear coat wouldn't work to bring back the glossy bike finish? It would even add better chip resistance for our pebble strewn roads here in CO.

Damon,

The most difficult aspect of fitting the P5 is getting the stack and reach correct, but their chart makes it pretty 'easy'. You cannot really just buy the same size that you might normally ride.

If the seat does not go low enough, just cut the post making sure there is at least 6.5cm of post still in the frame. I had to cut about 3-4cm off of the seatpost for the Mrs. who is 5'8" and on a 51cm.

So, measure your old bike very carefully using the suggestions on the web and see if it will work.

You need to measure you old bike. See this document.

For instance, I am 5'9" and ride a 54cm P3. I could ride a 51 or 54cm P5...so you might be between sizes.

Damon,

Thanks for all your good advice a couple weeks ago. I've decided on the P5-6 but have two related follow-up questions:

(1) I've checked with 3 Cervelo dealers. All 3 told me that if I order today, the Cervelo information they have is that they could have the bikes no sooner that March 2013. That could work (although, as you know, no one really wants to order in October and not get to ride it until March). However, if that is pushed back, that would really mess up my next year as I have my important races next year in May. Any idea if I can depend on that March date, at least by 3/31?

(2) Related question is that I could get a P5-3 in my size today. Could I convert that to a 6? Is that difficult/expensive, and how much time would be required to get the conversion parts?

Thanks once again.

Brandon,
Thank you so much for your answer and information. The thing that makes this decision difficult is that I have to order the bike in advance, since the P5 are really hard to find. The 56 is sold out until march. I actually use a road bike with aerobars, so I can´t use it to compare. What I know is that Scott recommends a 54 for my size (I got this from their size chart and also from the shop who wants to sell me the Plasma). When I compare it to the P5, there are not almost any differences. Anyway, I have to be sure about this so that´s why I´m looking for help.

Size 54 Bike

Reach

Stack
Plasma Premium

415

511
P5 Three

411

522
Difference

1%

-2%

Thanks again,
Nelson.

Those look pretty similar to me, and I would 'think' that you could go with the 54 if what the folks at Scott told you is correct. The other 'option' might be to try to find a fit cycle and just make sure.

If you are looking at the P5-3 then you do have the option of running normal bars on it, which might give you a bit more adjustability. And, even if you get the the fancy bar, you can always use some normal spacers under the bar until you get your fit just right. This way, you can run more hydraulic line for the brakes since you have to cut the line each time you want to make an adjustment (I think).

I do think that these bikes have quite a bit of adjustability. You just need to either measure 3 times before you cut if you are happy with your position. And, if you don't know what your position is or will be, you have to think ahead a bit so that you can make the needed adjustments down the road.
