UPS, hard case, and a lot of insurance worked for me. You could ship to hotel and put back together, or maybe even better, a bike shop to put back together and tune before the race. Many times a shop will even hold the case, and take the bike apart, pack it up, and somehow ship it back for cheaper than it costs dropping it off at the UPS store.

This is the way I get my bike to my destination. There is room for extra gear (helmets, shoes, wetsuit, bike tools, floor pump, Camelback if MTBing, etc.). I ship using FedEx and ship to the hotel or if a big race has a bike shop they use I'll ship it there if the fee for assembly/disassembly isn't steep...one year at Longhorn 70.3 I think it was Jack and Adams that would accept deliver, assemble, etc...if my memory serves they even brought your bike back to the shop from the race. I've never had any damage and you don't have to bubble wrap too many parts. In face our bikes are on their way to Arizona as I type for some MTBing next week. From NY to AZ one-way is around $160-170. If you have a FedEx account it is easy to print up labels and leave at the hotel and arrange for FedEx to pick it up when your trip is over.

Hey Man. IM just back from Hawaii IM70.3. a couple of hours ago. Absolutely brutal winds on a famously difficult course. The hard end of IM Hawaii Worlds. 25-35 mph w gust to 40+ including the run. Didn't make my planned time but IM freakin happy I finished! See IM Live for a recap of the day. Well... that was off topic.

Anyway... I used Bike Flights. Super easy and super responsive. A bike case (w my Cervelo) and a wheel case (w my ZIPPs.) Fedex picked up my cases on my front porch the day before I left for the Kona Coast via 2 Day Air. The cases arrived at my hotel in Hawaii 2 days later as promised.

I assembled my bike. Raced the next day. Repacked the bike and wheels the next day and Fedex picked the cases up the very next day. Ground return. I really don't want to see my bike for a few days and it was less expensive. ;)

Billl... the support fellow was super. Any email I sent he responded to within a few hours or by the next day (I live on the East Coast). He was always available on the phone.

Before this trip I shipped my own bike and had to find a place to drop it off. And I live in a very rural area of Ga. Then after the race, find a place to ship it home. Huge pain in the butt. Time wasted especially when you really want to enjoy places like San Fransisco... The Escape From Alcatraz, 2011. SilverMan in Las Vegas / Henderson, Nevada, 2010. etc.

I have no problem recommending them to anyone. They made our Hawaii trip much easier. Bike Flights is who I will go to now for bike shipping.

BTW... Tribike Transport (above banner) only covered the West Coast for this race.

I just did a quick BikeFlight calculation to Italy, as I'm leaving next week, the quote was as much as my ticket, $1450 round trip. That is crazy.

If the link didn't work, I just got a quote for $800 for PA to Milan, round-trip, using one of their cases, weight 30lbs, and expedited shipping (<5days). Using my personal case would be about $50 less, but their CrateWorks cases are pretty good (never used one though).

Don't forget this is insured shipping too. As the guy posted above they make it super easy and worry free. I checked a mtn bike once on a flight from NY to Alaska, and despite it being 14 years ago, I will never do it again for various reasons.

I think you really need to contact them and not believe everything you read on the Internet!
