Bill Maher at it again.
Bill Maher, the largest donor to President Obama's super PAC, called Mormonism a "cult" on his HBO show last night, and said that donating money to that religion doesn't count as charity because it's "bulls---."

Does he realize that he just donated $1,000,000 to a "cult" just a few weeks ago himself?

Who knew that he got to decide what is and isnt charity. Maybe he should petiton his favorite candidate to join him in calling his opponent a member of a cult.

I didn't think that campaign contributions were considered charity.

And he gets to decide whatever his opinions are, just like you get to run your mouth on this forum on a daily basis and spout off your moronic opinions.

Maher had some disparaging words toward a religion? Shocking!
Next thing the you know, Bill will think up something classless to call conservatives but he and his audience will think it is intellectually brilliant.

Does the moronic opinions thing apply to you too or are you exempt? God knows you have plenty.

What is it like to wake up each morning with your panties in a wad because someone disagrees with your political/religious/philosophical beliefs?

Shreek! The horror of someone doing or saying something that you disagree with. Quick...to slowtwitch you go to start yet another useless thread about the world's atrocities.

Mormonism has a name so it is easy for Maher to say that. This whole obama/global warming/green energy/class warfare socialism thing does not yet have a name other than "Bullshit" so it is abstract and not yet easy to label. It is however far more cultish than Mormonism.

I can't speak for Rodred, but I wake up every morning thinking to myself: "I've got a country to save today." Then I think the easiest way to communicate my awesome thoughts is to post some incindiary anti-liberal shit here in the LR. Most days and much to my delight, Rodred. BK or chainpin has already done my work for me. It is also comforting to know that people really do read this shit and take it to heart. This can only mean that we are keeping the darkside packed with fresh souls.

And yet you cared enough to comment. Why is that?

Let me give you an example: Most people think that Republicans charging Eric Holder in contempt of Congress might not go anywhere. This might be true. But even if it is only pure theater, it is worth something because it makes people think. I don't like obama. and for the most part, I don't like liberals or democrats. This next election will be won by capturing hearts and minds. It could be compared to warfare. So incindiary anti-liberal shit is just a 'take no prisoners' approach. The other side is no more noble than I am so I need to ratchet up the tension before they do. And when they do they'll be outplayed by my side. I am essentially The Ultimate American Patriot.

Agree 100% except I added something for you.

Just watched the show on the DVR. The conservative on the panel said that Romney donates a bunch of money to the poor. Maher called her on it and said that he does not donate to the poor, but to the Mormon Church. Those are two different things.

Then, just like he does with all religions, he called Mormonism a cult. Of course, I've heard several of my pastors call LDS a cult. I've heard prominent right wing political campaigns call LDS a cult. Most Catholics I know call it a cult. And, the Greek Orthodox Church considers Catholicism to be a cult too.

If you're going to whine about someone calling LDS or any other religion a cult, you're going to need more kleenex.

This is spot on.

One thing of note, the LDS church does help a lot of poor people.
They do a ton of good things that they get credit for.

Just watched it as well and completely agree with the above.

Funniest quote I heard from him was "do you know a single poor Mormon? You do? Name one?!". When I thought about the question, I couldn't think of one either. Every Mormon family I know is full of dentists, doctors or lawyers. They're all super smart, really athletic, and really freaking nice! Cult or not, they're doing something right!.

True dat. I work with 4 Mormon men here. ALL of them are single paycheck households with 4 kids (all parents under the age of 40, and some under 30). All live in nice homes.

As far as the cheerfull / happiness? Must be all the anti-depressants.... 1 in 5 LDS women are on them.

My personal test of "cult" status for a religion can be answered by one question.... if you leave or get excommunicated, do they forbid your family for having a relationship with you? If the answer is yes, than, by my standards, you got yourself a nice little cult goin on. It's all about control....

I just listened to the podcast. This wasn't anything knew or unusual for him. Regarding his donation to the Obama campaig. 1) He's not claiming that it's charirty. That was the whole point that Romney isn't donating to a "charity that helps poor people." He's donating to the Mormon church. There's a big difference. Maher further said that donating to the Opera or donating to Cornell University shouldn't be considered a charity either.

2) The campaign fund to re-elect Obama for president doesn't remotely qualify as a "cult." It's a presidential campaign and he'd prefer that Obama be the preident over Romney and contributed campaign funds. That's it! He's not a member of the Democratic party.

My apologies for bumping this back to the top.

Amen.

I'm an atheist although I was raised strictly under the religion of Christian Science until I was a teenager. I look at all religions through the same lens today. I don't believe it's a stretch at all to refer to Mormonism as a cult and I think your personal test is extremely valid.

and to which you took time out of your day to reply...

Out of curiousity, what are people supposed to do on a forum that is intended to let people express their opinions about (most) anything and (most) everything? Sit here and listen to virtual crickets?

Or, do you just wake up with your panties in a wad because someone who disagrees with your political/religious/philosophical beliefs has the audacity to post about it on an internet forum designed for doing exactly that?

What "prior" post are you referring to? The one to which you replied was my first.

I'd strongly encourage you to look up the definition of "prior" and consider how it applies in your post.
