Smelly and Sweaty Bike Shoes
My Bike shoes (1-year old) are really starting to smell from all of the sweat.

1) I recently did 2 hours on the indoor trainer and my shoes were wet for days afterwards. Any way of solving that problem?
2) When I touch my shoes, I am not getting a slighty sticky feel to it, probably from all of the sodium. Should I wash the shoes with a towel and soap?
3) How about Febreeze or baby powder? What are some tricks/tips?

The shoes aren't dirty (grass and mud wise) they are just sweaty.

I have a boot drier I use for both running and bike shoes when they get wet. Helps them dry quickly and avoid stink with wet shoes.

If the stink persists, I was them in dishwasher with dish soap w/o any dishes on top shelf with insoles taken out and open wide. No drying them in there. After they come out they are quite wet so I put newspapers in them to get some moisture out then pop them on my boot drier and they are good.

The best way to keep both bike shoes as well as running shoes from becoming stinky is to keep them dry. My wife and I have used a boot drier for the last 30 years and find that even 5 year old cycling shoes still smell fine as long as you put them on the drier after each sweaty ride. We each have our own so there is no problem sharing.

Does anyone use washing machine? I use it for both bike and running shoes. Never any problems.

Mix one part bleach with five parts water.

Soak shoes overnight and then run them through a wash cycle and let dry.

They will turn out great.

The fact that they don't dry must be a function of high humidity. Try to find a place to store with low humidity.

Yup. Warm water with detergent and 1/2 cup of bleach.

Remove the insoles (toss them in as well), and put tennis balls in the heels if your running shoes have heel counters that get mushy when wet.

Air dry (dryer heat will kill the glue holding them together).

I wash my bike and run shoes (even the $500 carbon fiber sole Sidis) a couple of time per year, especially after a couple of no socks races.

I use the local laundry down the street 2 - 3 times a year. I usaually take both running and cycling shoes along with a couple of extra large towels to throw in as well, helps keep it quite. Run them thru a normal wash cycle and then place out to dry. Yes, remove the insoles as well.

Never had a problem and usual cost is $5 a wash.

Boot dryer x100. I have 4 double dryers and a single. I've used the same pair of shoes for about 10 years on my Computrainer 3-4 times per week year around. And though they don't smell out of the box new, they don't issue any foul odor.

I wanna go fast!

What an animal!

You must be in great shape. Is this in addition to outdoor/other training?

Have to agree with the boot dryer.

The bad stink is really from fungus/mold that grows when things are left damp. Once that funk sets in its almost impossible to get rid of. Letting things dry out in the sun or soaking in mirazyme help but the easiest thing to do is to dry stuff ASAP and don't let the fungus/mold set in in the first place. The same goes for wet suits and towels and really anything that gets wet all the time. You don't want to stuff wet gear into a plastic bag and leave it for hours. I always try to use mesh bags and try to let stuff air out as much as possible if i cant get to my boot dryer. Boot dryers can also be used for helmets, gloves, and you can even drape ur wet suit over it.

Wash them. Then dry them. It's not rocket science.

How do you wash bike shoes though? You throw them in the drier with the pedal pieces on there and all?

are there such things as shin sweat bands?

I just wash them in a bucket with liquid laundry detergent. Easy!

Cedar shoe trees from day 1. If you're like me, you spent more on the bike shoes than your dress shoes so treat them accordingly. The refresh the cedar, just use a little sand paper. All other points are valid: 1. Don't let them stay wet and 2. they can be washed.

If you get a boot dryer you will never have to actually wash your shoes. They just don't get funky if you keep them dry. Even a good boot dryer is only 60 bucks and you can use it for more than just shoes and boots and it works year round as they are really meant for snow sports.
