Getting rid of Plantar Warts
Does anyone have any good suggestions on getting rid of plantar warts. I have 2 on the ball of my right foot that I just can't get rid of. I have tried duct tape which is really good at almost getting them gone but never works completely, and the over the counter freeze method. I have hesitated on the cryogenic freezing as I don't want to be kept out of running too long.

Anyone with experience or suggestions?

old school - compound w. keep putting it on until you get all the "root" out. you wind up with a pretty good sized hole in your foot, put it'll close up.

The Dr. Scholls Clear Away remover finally worked for me - the OTC freeze stuff didn't seem to do anything for me, but it could be that the combo of the two (freeze & Clear Away) was what really did do the trick. They say not to use them both at the same time, but I was desperate. :) I didn't have any issues with training through treatment.

My wife's been using the Scholls Clear Away on hers for months now... it's gotten marginally smaller so I can't say it's not working at all, just very, very slowly.

scrape em out real good. soak a small piece of gauze or cotton pad with apple cider vinegar and tape over the wart. it will take a week or two with changing the dressing daily. don't be alarmed when it turns black and then what's left falls off or out.

sometimes it works great and sometimes not. and i have no idea what creates the difference. but 2 out of three so far for me. a doc acquaintence recommended trying this instead of freezing.

Train hard...race well.

A long time ago, a whole lot of vodka and some needle nosed vise grips pliers worked for me. Still have the scar but I got down to the root and it never came back.

Stevia root liquid from a health food store. Place directly on the wart, and soak the pad of a bandage, apply. Change out 2-3 times daily. Worked like a charm. Took a few weeks, but was better than any of the other options I was given (including injecting some type of chemotherapy cancer drug directly into said wart or cutting it out). Recommended by a foot doc as a second opinion to the wackjob that wanted to inject cancer drugs into the bottom of my foot.

I'm getting rid of one right now. I'm using the walmart brand, over the counter plantar wart medication.
They are little round stickers. I stick one on the wart and leave it for a few days, then I use a scalpel to shave off the top layer.
Then back on goes another disc. It's getting noticeably smaller as it works it way out. Good luck with yours.

X2. Compound w worked for me. The freezing products did not work even though I kept them applied for much longer periods of time than prescribed. I would apply the old formula compound w after showering. It took 12-14 days.

Don't screw around with all these "home made remedies", go to your Doc and get him/her to hit them with the liquid nitrogen, it's fast and effective. I would be surprised if you missed more then a day or two of running. I had six on one foot a few years ago and I was back running in a week. Then, always wear shower thongs when using public showers, it's the most common place to pick up plantars warts.

Had laser surgery for mine. Out of commission for a week or so. I think I could actually run before I was allowed to swim.

I wanna go fast!

Agreed, the over-the-counter is a waste of time if they're in there deep. I spent several months fighting a cluster of them on the bottom of my left heel, doing duct tape, salcytic acid, everything, going so far as to use a Dremel to try to drill them out. It was war.

It wasn't until going to my PCP over the winter that he suggested beetle juice: it's the saliva of a blister beetle, wiped onto the warts as a paste, that causes blisters. I had one hit and it didn't work. The second one, did; it was INTENSELY painful... walking on a deep blister on your heel was no fun, but the blister lifts the wart off the skin and out of the flesh, root and all. After a week and a half, I was able to run again, and the things were gone for good.

Am I the only person for whom the over-the-counter freeze treatment worked? I had to hit it two or three times, but it eventually got down to the core of the wart and killed it for good. I tried salcytic acid (the little patches) for 2-3 weeks before finally resorting to the freeze-off, but they didn't seem to do much.

Use a prescription medication called 5-fluorouracil.

I had a plantar wart that lasted for years and before getting a prescription for this from a dermotologist, tried everything commonly suggested: liquid nitrogen, salicylic acid, surgical cutting (done by a doctor), and maceration (covering with duct tape). FYI, running while using fluorouracil wasn't a problem.

Addition: I just googled it and found clinical trials claim that 95% of plantar warts are eradicated with 12 weeks use of 5-fluorouracil.

Funny you mention the blister beetle juice. I just came back from dermatologist with my son for warts and she used the beetle juice on him - turns out it is synthetic though. Freezing is still best for really deep ones.

If you go to the Podiatrist, ask how aggressive he/she will be. I had two on the underside of my little toe and he wanted to "experiment" with different treatments. The thing that ended up working was the home freeze kit and I completely ignored the instructions and warnings. Yes, I know the risks, but I was tired of four months of bi-weekly treatments. In 30 days, they were gone.

I had one that I bttled off and on for more than a year with salicylic acid (Compound W) - that was a waste of time. If it is big enough under the skin the liquid nitrogen crap will do nothing but keep you off your feet more than you need to be. Last fall I went back to the doc for about 4 or 5 applications of that garbage. I was off running/cycling for a lot of that time as the wart was on the ball of my foot and felt like a bad burn for a week or so after each of the applications. Finally I just said to do something more radical. He cut is out with electric current. Seems like that worked.

OTC remedies didn't work for me.

My GP tried weekly nitrogen with no effect. The GP also tried a new-ish treatment that has been found to be effective sometimes, that is typically for genital warts and is meant to trigger an immune response, but it also didn’t work for me (and holy crap was that embarrassing to get the Rx filled!).

Finally went to a podiatrist, I wish I could remember what it was he used, but there was a regular strength and a really strong one, each one causes a massive blister to form under the wart to lift it then he would use a scalpel to scrape it away – repeat until the root was gone. The wart makes itself at home inside that thick layer of skin on your, so there’s lots of scraping. I could barely walk on the foot after the really strong stuff was applied from 12hrs to 2-3 days later. The regular strength wasn’t as painful, but wasn’t as effective, and it was combined with an occlusive tape (like the duct tape method). It all heals pretty quick though.

The virus that causes it will always be with you, so best advice is to nail the thing with OTC before it takes hold because the longer it’s there, the happier it gets and the more your immune system gets used to it.

Head down, thumbs up, give'r

Compound W, duct tape, band aid. Use a nail file to file them down every time you re-apply. Slow but it eventually works. Be careful with the W...it kills all the skin it touches.

Try WartPeel from NuCara pharmacy. You'll probably need a prescription. My 11yo had a terrible case of plantars warts last year. Tried Compound W, Tried Duct Tape, tried freezing them, nothing worked. We tried a new podiatrist who finally prescribed WartPeel and in a week they were GONE. Had a little hole in his foot for about another week and no problems since. Our insurance didn't cover it...but it was only like $75 and well worth it. The pharmacy is a compounding pharmacy in Austin, TX. You send them the prescription and they mail you the drug. You put it on there with a little pick they give you and cover it with a piece of tape, daily for about a week. No pain. It was amazing.

+1 I got them really bad in high school and tried all kinds of OTC crap, duct tape, cutting them out with a knife, etc. Finally I sucked it up and when to the PCP, who took out the liquid nitrogen. Since they were so extensive I got multiple treatments but it worked great and have had no problems since.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. There is plenty to try out here and experiment with. It seems like one solution does not fit all which has been my experience so far as well. If I find a solution I will post back with the winning method.

Cheers,

+2 on the nitrogen.

I had one show up on the 1st met head (nice spot for running) last sept.

whittled down every few days with a scalpel and OTC freezer treatments knocked it down, but not out.

salicylic acid pads, same frequency of scrapings, down, not out.

duct tape. the wart just laughed at that.

4 liquid nitrogen doses, from the doc about 2 weeks apart, finally got it.

my brother, OTOH, used duct tape on one on his foot in November, and it was gone before Christmas.

to the OP, try your experiment and let us know which works for you
